KapCon 19 - January 2010

That sounds fabulous, I would love to see those places at night!

A larp would be good too

That all sounds awesome! I lived in Wellington for almost my entire life, and never did any of that stuff. It’ll be nice to have a group of friends to spend time with, and meet more of the Wgtn crowd.

I would love to tour around Wellywood. Te Papa is on my list of ā€œTo go to somedayā€. I’ve never actually seen anything more than the inside of the airport or an aerial view of Wellington.
Thank you for sharing your preference with us Adam. Since you’ve not stated that you’re coming, I’m not sure what impact your preference has on this discussion, but thank you for sharing with the class regardless.

Me, personally, would rather not spend 10 hours on a train each way when I have a long and action-packed gaming weekend in the middle and will be flying instead. If this reduces my geek cred, so be it. I will have to do something supremely geeky (like, oh, I don’t know, organise a larping convention) to gain some of it back
Don’t make me bite you…

just for you them…

I agree you get an extra 9 hours or so in capital city.

Te Papa, The New Zealand Film Archives, The Embasy Theatre…I think I can suggest a few ways for the group fill 9 hours in wellington
Actually, given that the train is 10hrs each way you get an extra 18 hours by flying. So 20hrs travel vs. 2hrs?
Also the Maritime Museum and the botanical Gardens are both worth a visit.
Incidentally FYI for Kapcon11 - AirNZ start flying into Paraparam from April next year.

Meh - what can I say - 10 hours of table top gaming sounds like a laugh to me - seems i’m the only hardcore nutter here

I for one prefer to be comfortable when gaming - and having travelled on that train, it does not meet my standards of ā€œcomfortā€.

There’s a chance that after the Wellington-Auckland route got taken over by the government again as Kiwi Rail the route has started to improve (note that there’s a chance that’s the case, it isn’t necessarily true).

A couple of years ago. It may have improved, but even if they’ve raised it to the standards of the Capital Connection carriages (tables between the seats etc), they still have the problem of bad toilets, indifferent food, background noise, and smelling of disinfectant and vomit.

After you’ve spent 60 hours on a Bolivian bus, those are luxuries! (Oh, and 10 hours in Peru on a bus next to a woman who had chronic food poisoning. Not. Hot.)

I’m for flying, though. Social trips in confined spaces can turn pretty nasty at the drop of a wrong word, and ten hours is a looooong time.

Same old carriages, though, which means the only tables are in the Observer car. I usually like travelling by train, but I have awful memories of taking the overnight train, back when they had an overnight train, when some other train had derailed and they couldn’t clear it in time so we were loaded onto buses, except not quite enough buses so some people were standing and noone got two seats to stretch out in. I got very motion sick and had to plead to be able to sit up in the front where they’d reserved seats for some of the later stops. It was not a good night.

Yeah…I’ll pay my $100, save my 18 hours of travel time and just get my ten hours gaming in at KapCon.

Snap! Same thing happened here. The Auckland to Wellington train is hopeless.

Fail, I guess im also too used to the UK rail network… :frowning:

That page seems down for me.

The page is back up, and it looks like it is made of epic win. The six different alien races look like heaps of fun and while I am invariably drawn to the one that gives me an excuse to wear Victorian, I might talk myself out of it in favour of something new by the time character questionnaires open

Looks great, guys. Can’t wait.

Great, looking to drip feed some more information shortly.

Cheers,

Bring on the questionnaire!
