When is a Larp not a Larp?

When the participants don’t know what a Larp is. :open_mouth:

There was a MilSim event held last weekend (Fri 26th) at the Old Tokanui Psychiatric Hospital.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokanui_Ps … c_Hospital

It ran from Friday night to Sunday morning.
By a Wellington based club.
60-70 attended, 25? from akl.
$100 entry fee.
Venue hire for the duration, $2k?

This was different to the last two events ran by the group.
It was continuous, Game On from start to finish.
Players were encouraged to role play their parts.

Let see,
+Awesome venue
+Cool props
+Story
+Role playing

Sounds like a LARP to me.

Some of the comments from players
“I liked the Wellington RagHead force they were so damn cool they played there part so well and they were hardcOre, they helped made it feel almost real infact i thought i was going to die.”
“Role playing, dressing up and how it was able to tweak our own attitudes to the game.”
“Recon and dealing with civillians in the market. This was one of the only times I felt like a real civi and I struggled to attack them 30 seconds after they were so nice, but I did anyway. (Well done guys).”

There were some issues.
-Infrastructure was not in place as advised. Generators were to be present but none were. Working toilets were available but people were not advised.
-Miscommunication. The GM was also playing so when he gave intel, people though it was from the GM rather than his character.
-People not used to the open ended styled of game play. Yes you can take the keys to their armoured vehicle.

Not many images from the event yet.

There you have it, LARPers and they didn’t even know it.
There is talk of another event being held there, I figure some real larpers would only added to the immersion.

Awesome. Has someone from the committee and or Wellington gotten in contact with them officially? Sounds like an awesome venue too.

I’m happy to contact them. Does anyone know their contact details?

Which contact were you after?
The site contact or the gaming group contact?

They had a two-page photo spread in the dom-Post “indulgence” magazine this morning.

That looks totally incredible, awesome to hear this kind of stuff is happening!

And I think I’m not the only one that would jump at the chance to be involved somehow next time

That site looks awesome. Perfect for a modern or futuristic larp in a sprawling set of run-down buildings on a big property.

Post apocalyptic, zombie apocalypse, post-Judgement-Day Terminator, cyberpunk… any number of possibilities.

Tokanui is only 14kms frm Te Awamutu (where I work). Assuming moderate traffic, Auckland to Tokanui would only take a few hours travel. An hour and a half to Hamilton (from South Auckland), 20-25 minutes across H-town, 20 minutes to Te Awamutu, 5-10 minutes across TA and maybe 15 minutes to Tokanui. (from my house in Hamilton, 45mins)

Question is, how far are the Aucklanders willing to travel for LARP? Most venues used so far (that I have been to) have been relatively close to Auckland. And limited in number.

Who would be happy with travelling to Tokanui? And for the Wellingtonians, well Hamilton airport links you guys to the Waikato directly.

I’d consider it for a really great event, if there was plenty of warning and my diary allowed.

It actualy does look like a great venue. You could even do an over night game with the tents inside deal that they have in some of the pics.

Yeah, I was assuming a weekend game with everyone bringing squabs or air mattresses to sleep on. Probably don’t need tents, given there are lots of rooms and they have roofs.

I noted in the Wiki on the place that there is old asbestos insulation in some buildings (it is a wiki but…). I’m wondering if this had any bearing on where people slept? And probably limits the internal access to some buildings. I would imagine maybe the houses wouldn’t have had this issue but maybe the main buildings did…

If asbestos is left undisturbed it is not a problem. If the ceiling and wall linings (gib board) have been damaged and is exposing the insulation, then that’s another situaion.
Asbestos only gets airborne when people move it around - say when people are removing it. And when it is airborne there is the possibilty of getting into lungs and causing illness.

This is true Hannah, I only brought it up as it is mentioned in the wiki…

Hi Guys Remember me

I attended this event and the whole time i was there i was thinking how much you guys would get into it, i mentioned NZLarps to Troy (the organiser) and he thought your input would be great as it would give the insurgent force more freedom to plan missions.

the pictures of the site simply do not do it justice, it has housing blocks office building even industrial buildings and hospital type wards, for a dark future apocalyptic larp it would be beyond compare, (it even has a creepy haunted feel in some buildings)

I have been talking to some of the other Milsim guys in auckland and there is talk of another weekend game later this year (Only talk at this stage) and I am already planning to have LARP input in the plan.

so stay tuned I will be in touch.

and as for the asbestos, there were some buildings we were not allowed into for safety reasons and the organisers were in close communication with the caretaker so if there was any real concern it would have been bought up.

Keeps out wind if the windows should be broken or the doors missing. Also keeps out insects…not to mention other wild life.

there was a meeting of team leaders last night and it was decided that we would be running another Call of Duty game later this year (date TBC)

I suggested that NZLarps be involved and this was well recieved so could expressions of interest be posted so that I can get an idea of what you guys think.

NZlarps personnel will be used mostly in non combat roles with a couple of minor combat roles (you wont be directly shot at) and one specialized role.

I look forward to hearing you responses

cheers
Carl
