The Flight of the Hindenburg

Hey folks,

The people who wrote The Flight of the Hindenburg for last year’s Kapcon have kindly agreed to pass me the materials so that we can run it at Chimera.

The Hindenburg was a historical airship, a German Zepplin filled with hydrogen that flew between Germany, the US, and South America taking high-class passengers on a luxury sky cruise that modern planes cannot match. It was nearly as long as the Empire State Building is tall, and had a huge dining room, a lounge, and even a pressurised smoking room. It tragically burst into flames in one of the 20th century’s most famous catastrophes. You can see the TV footage at the link below, accompanied by a the radio commentary that made the phrase “oh, the humanity” so well known:

The scenario takes place some years before the crash, on a fictional charity flight filled with a mixture of historical and fictional characters. Expect glamour, adventure, high politics, shady underworld dealings, and supernatural twists. Every character, no matter how pedestrian they might sound, is a lead role and tied into several plots. The game will run on the Saturday night of Chimera, and we’d love if everyone could play in it together, or (especially if you’ve played it before) help me with running it.

Once I’ve finished re-jigging the cast list a little, we’ll ask everyone who has registered for Chimera to give their preferences for characters and we’ll cast the game, leaving you plenty of time to costume. There will be a Best Costume prize for The Flight of the Hindenburg, voting by all the attendees.

Cheers,

Ryan

Will this be running concurrent with another LARP at the same time, or will it be the only LARP played in its time slot? As if you want to be attracting people from outside Auckland, namely the folks who played in this game in Wellington, having games that they’ve already played in doesn’t help the cause.

Don’t get me wrong though, I’m all for running successful LARPs again for a different crowd, but is it something you want to be doing at an event where you are trying to attract people from out of town such as Chimera?

(or am I missing the point entirely of Chimera?)

If we have more than 70 attendees then I think running another larp alongside The Flight of the Hindenburg would be a good idea, for the reasons you give.

If not, I’d be keen to have help from people who’ve played the game to help GM it. They would still have a whole lot of other new larps to come up for.

Berths on the Flight of the Hindenburg are starting to book. It would pay to get registered soon and book a character if you’ve got your eye on one.

I’m away until July 7th, will reply to any character requests when I get back.

When can we start getting characters? I’m really pumped to start on costuming for it.

Register, PM me your selection, and the character is yours. It’s first come first served.

Hi Ryan,
I understand that you would like a hand running Flight of the Hindenburg.
I’d like to offer my services, but there are a couple of things you should know first:
I have never run, helped to run or written a LARP before. (Well, I helped out with the latest Nibelungen, but that was mainly voices as opposed to story stuff.)
I have, in fact, only played in three LARPs.
I don’t know the Auckland LARPing crowd very well nor their strengths and weaknesses. (Which could be a good thing.)
It is during term time so my time may be somewhat limited for meetings beforehand.

However!
The plus side is:
I moved up from Wellington this year.
I played in the original Flight of the Hindenburg.
I know the writers quite well (and thus I am well briefed on most of the character’s plots as I quizzed them for weeks afterwards).
I’m friendly and enthusiastic!

So if I sound useful to you, let me know.

Ultratastic, even.

Megatastic, I say. Ideal to help run this.

Aw shucks.

Thanks Fraser, I very gratefully accept your help to run Hindenburg. I’m in New York just now, but when I’m back on June 7th let’s talk.

Two more GMs would be ideal, they had 4 at the original run to keep things smooth during runtime.

I’ve finally gotten to the stage where I can commit to coming (yay! hooray for paid work  ) and I don’t want to replay Flight of the Hindenberg, but I’m happy to float around as serving staff. I could combine that with on the spot GMing, so long as you don’t expect me to help with organising, because I’m currently learning a new job and don’t have much brain space left over.

Yay for paid work as well! It will be cool to see you there!

Thanks Steph, that’d be great.

In case anyone has missed it, here’s the page with the description of Flight of the Hindenburg and the list of characters for players to chose from:

nzlarps.org/chimera/larp_the_fli … enburg.htm

The character sheets aren’t ready to distribute yet, but if you’re registered for the convention then you can book a character now by PMing me.

I’ve marked which characters have been reserved so far on the Flight of the Hindenburg page.

A number of players have booked for Chimera but not reserved a Flight of the Hindenburg character yet. Please send me a private message (click the PM button below this message) to reserve your character.

If we sent through characters with the registration, that has got to you?

Yes, I’ve received those thanks.
