T-Minus: Airsoft/Larp Mix - Saturday 14th June

Airsoft Auckland have invited nzLARPers along for another collaborative game.

Title: T-Minus
When: Saturday 14th June, 10am-4pm
Where: Meet at Parakai Pools
Cost: Free for larpers

The Situation:
The Communist North Korea is defiant over its proposed missile tests in the upcoming days. The UN Security Council has condemned the actions, saying that this is fundamentally saber rattling by North Korea and that they will be pressuring for trade sanctions to be reinstated.

Leader of Free United Communist Korea, Kim Sung Pak, in a televised address, has repeatedly stated that this missile test is merely to further its space program, and that its payload is nothing more than a communications satellite, and that capitalist governments are trying to suppress the glorious people of North Korea from progressing towards their future.

Meanwhile, tension is rising in the sino-Korean relations into the recent occupation of Manchuria by North Korean troops and subsequent construction of the missile’s launch site in Manchuria. Many have fled the area while villagers are kept under constant reminder that Free United Communist Korea is in control. A recent development is a para-military group had been recently formed by the name of Manchurian Independence Liberation Front which have cause the North Korean Military to step up its scorched earth tactics and security…

Want to play?
We’d like to get a good larper turn out for this event! Airsoft Auckland has gone to a lot of effort to include us in their game, so let’s make sure we actually turn up! PM me to discuss roles.

We’ve so far got seven larpers coming along to this event. Room for more, PM me if keen

It sounds real interesting, I would have liked to play, but this clashes with something else we’ve got on, so hopefully next time… Hope it works well enough for there to be a next time.

I think so far we have Craig, Gaffy, Nikki, Kim, Peter plus myself, plus Tigger as a maybe.

Anyone else keen?

I am getting all excited.

Look forward to catching you all tomorrow.
:stuck_out_tongue:

If you’re coming as part of the larping contingent, you’ll be given your full briefing tomorrow on your character. Most of you have been given a vague synopsis of your character so you can costume accordingly.

If you haven’t been given a brief synopsis, contact me ASAP.

Anyone want a lift? Best to ping me on 021 136 8000.

Thank you all for joining us
Sorry it did not go according to pan.
Hopefully you enjoyed yourself a little and got some LARP moments to go home with.

Did the field look suitable as a LARPing venue?

The field was beautiful. Would be a nice place to play a day game.

I really enjoyed myself, but then again I got a bit more of an involved character. The camera was a nice touch. Thank you.

I was talking to Sarah, and I think the best way to improve the game dynamic is to give the Airsofters characters as well.

That way, there can be more interaction between us and them.

yeah could do with a character myself, i m willing to give it a try. what kinda theme/setting would work?? spy/espionage?? cheesy action movie??

oooh, cheesy action movie fun. will it end with a 10 minute fist fight?

hehe ‘scorched earth’ - I hope it wasn’t anything like the computer game

Unfortunately I was too busy running around to get into the game and observe.

But here is what I learned with 20/20 hindsight

 1. We needed one more meeting of the organising team once the roles and players were confirmed.

 2. I should have given clear directions to all that were coming.

That extra meeting we could have ironed out the plot and story, making for a more enjoyable larp.
And getting you guys there on time

As far as a LARP event went, you will have to fill me in.
All I can comment on is the recorded footage I watched.
It did not look like you were having much fun :frowning:

On the AS side we had issues as well.
I chose a bad day, student exams.
We were short GM’s/DS. We needed 3 but only got one.
There were insufficient helpers to setup the field/props in the time we had.
So the props were sub standard.
Only half the players wanted to take it serisouly.
If we run another I will aim for quality over quantity.
We will get a smaller turnout but at least everyone there will be in the mood.

A quick edit of footage shot by the CNN camera person
[2mb]

Yay! You got some of the best bits. Right after Anna yells about families being killed, Sridat tries to confiscate my camera and some guy walks up behind me and put a gun to my head.

It was a highlight of the game for me.

Not much time to give a full review, but I had heaps of fun, enjoyed the character and everything that came with him… glad I don’t have to risk my actual life to get that experience.

When you’re media, it doesn’t matter what’s happening - you just cover it. When I recounted the tale to people afterwards they said it was like something from ‘Big Fish’ - so incredible that it must be exaggerated. That’s larp gold - there was some epic shit going down and we were there.

Cool.
Looks like you went with ‘shoot everything, edit later’ way of filming.
At least it made me feel like I was there so made up for me not getting a chance to play.
Next time I will get you a few more tapes.

Some of your voice overs were classic.

Hopefully I can edit the video to show it was good shit, and not some fish tale.

edit:
Unfortunately there were no photographers running about so a deathly lack of pics.

if you want better footage, we should impliment a “CNN embeded reporter/s” styles on the next game … have multiple LARPs with individual cameras being CNN reporters and camera person so we can get them included in the physical action of things … instead of them just waiting for minutes or even hours on end for for some action … each squad / team is then given instructions on specific objectives that needs to be completed or hijacked … the AS people will then treat them like “real” reporters (kinda like in Iraq) when they could be asked question about life back home and stuff

an example would be one squad will be randomly given the task of installing a virus somewhere on the field while another squad (out of maybe a total of 5-8 squads throughout the field all at the same time) will be told to hoof it to the other side (give the first team’s location, obviously) to stop the virus and kidnap their embeded reporter for ransom … on the other hand, a third squad might be given the task to ambush the second squad and will be given the order to kidnap the second squad’s reporter as a traitor … and so forth …

as a whole, the reporters will be the primary, secondary and tertiary objective of the fighting squads (ie: do whatever task like hacking first, protect their embeded reporters second and kidnap / kill the opposing squad/reporters as per ordered) …

this will have minimal acting for the AS people (we’re not really that good in the acting part unless heavily scripted) and which means we can do what the AS people are there for (as Shooters) … and the LARP contingent can act it up as they see fit (hard core reporter, nusance reporter, tabloid reporter, etc)

we can then collate all the video taken from the day (heaps of video footage here folks) into a proper CNN style TV news broadcast and make it an AS/LARP’s promotional video

Yup, we can make it happen.
But you do know how much planning that is going to take :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

And we will need more than just one helper to show on the day

not much planning i would say as you only need like 1-2 people to be the Commanders, relaying the orders to the individual squads via dedicated radio channels (ie: you have the same amt of radios infront of you as there are channels/squads) … your just gonna end up playing a live version of Command & Conquer and make sure you kinda know where each squad will be

Running the day is only a 1/3 of the actual organising work.
There is people, props, transport, attendance, equipment, virgin sacrifices, etc
Let’s just say a lot

Players do not see all this behind the scene stuff, which is fine.
Just show up when they say they will and we will be happy.

If you want to push the envelope we could setup up a news desk that downloads the footage and make live reports. :astonished:
Or at least say “This just in” :stuck_out_tongue:
