Sewing/crafting bee - stitch-n-bitch

Hola,

It’s about that time where the procrastinators and the busy amongst us are starting to panic about what’s left to sew or make.

Misery loves company, so I’m happy to offer up my west Auckland home for a night of sewing, crafting, shared-inspiration and company. Nibbles and drinks provided.

I’ve got a sewing machine, a fabric stash, paint, hot glue gun and all sorts of random crap that might be of use to someone. Anyone.

So keen to see if there’s any interest in me organising such a night. If so, lemme know what night might work best for ya and we’ll take it from there. I can offer lifts around the area and some crash space too.

That sounds cool. Let me know when and where and it might prompt me to start thinking about my costumes for Chimera and get stuck in and create something for each game.

Hi Tanya!

I’m in Titirangi. Dunno when it’d be - depends on what suits others. But in the meantime if you need advice on your costumes I, or just about everyone else here, would be happy to help.

Sounds like a great idea

What a great idea - especially for people like me who can barely sew buttons on an outfit, let alone an entire costume. I’d be interested, depending on the day - I’m out west auckland way too in Massey.

I’d be keen. I’m not making anything for myself (I don’t really get to play at Chimera :frowning: ) but I’m making costumes for Tigger, so I wouldn’t mind likewise panicking company while I work on his costumes!

Awesome - ok this officially counts as enough interest I think to start setting something up. How about something on the 13th or 14th of August (Sat or Sun).

Alternatively, this Sunday the 7th could work as well.

Crap, I’m roleplaying in the evenings of the 7th, 13th and 14th :frowning:

I was thinking they’d be during the day

Sundays during the day are fine  Saturday 13th during the day is Nexus.

13 or 14 are my weekend off

Ok, it’s sounding like the day of the 14th would work!

Shall we lock it in?

sounds like a plan

Just a thought. For future events like this one we could make the community workshop / makerspace at Tangeball available. We are working on getting an industrial sewing machine set up there, and if anyone would like to donate or cohabitate any other crafting equipment, like an overlocker etc which would add value to the space for all cosplayers / LARPers / steampunks to use, that would be great too. We have a huge space in the central city (Newton, off K-Road) and would love to see it being used for this type of activity in the future.

The 'space has kitchen and toilet facilities, a lounge area, computers and internet availability, and a large area with workbenches and a wide selection of power and hand tools that can be used for making props etc. I also run a weekly steampunk crafting drop-in workshop there, called Steampunk@Tangleball, which happens every Tuesday evening from 8pm. Here are some pictures of the 'space. (Warning: these pictures are large.)

Wahey, that’s awesome.

Would it be available for this event (14th Sunday)? Would there be a fee for using it?

That Tangleball space looks very cool, great concept. Definitely the kind of thing that Auckland larpers could make good use of.

Is it possible to just drop in and have a look at it sometime? I’m working in Newton at the moment.

I am a financial member there and am a keyholder, so I can go in any time I like. Just drop me a PM to arrange a time to meet up down there.

I’m fairly sure the 'space would be available for Sunday 14th, but I can check. As for a fee to use the 'space, as long as a financial member of Tangleball is there (such as myself), there wouldn’t be a fee as such, but a koha would be appreciated for the use of the power, etc. Probably a gold coin donation per head.

EDIT: I have just checked Tangleball’s Google Calendar and there doesn’t appear to be anything scheduled for that day. I also don’t have anything planned that day, and would be quite happy to come along and open the makerspace for the pre-Chimera stitch-n-bitch event.

Thanks heaps! If we could have it open from, say, 12-4 how would that suit you?
… from, say, 12-4 …
That suits me well. I’m flexible and can be there whenever needed for the day. Parking is not great, being in the central city, but on a Sunday it shouldn’t be quite so bad. I’ll have the roller-door up so that people can pull up at the door to unload any sewing machines and materials easily, and then go and park their car.

Here is a map to Tangleball, which is at 27 Edinburgh Street, Newton, Auckland CBD. It is on the corner of Edinburgh and Ophir streets. If anyone wants to ring us on the day, the Tanglephone number is 022-069-2047.
