Rolling pin

I’d like to make a larp-safe rolling pin, for comedy! And for Chimera!

I was thinking of " carving " it out of a pool-noodle but it occurrs to me that’s open-cell foam and can’t be latexted. I’d like to latex it purely for aesthetic reasons as I think it’d look nicer than something that was spray-painted.

What happens if you latex over a pool-noodle? Does it just peel off? Should I just make a big hurking block out of layers of camp mat and carve that instead? I don’t have a belt sander so am a bit warry of that option.

From the Hammers thread below.

I made one for Wolfgangs that was made out of just normal foam. It held it’s shape ok…

I too am looking to make one for Asterix but have never made a larp weapon in my life. Where would I get the appropriate foam?

Wanna get together and make rolling pins one day soon?

Are Unhygenix & Bacteria in the LARP? Have they suitable larp-safe fish to supply to the villagers for brawling purposes (and/or throw at Fulliautomatix)?

sounds good I’ll let you know when I’m free/have acquired the materials.

am currently working on larp safe fishies, not sure if ill have enough to supply the entire village but should have a goodly amount for myself and the wifey of various sizes and uses (some little throwy ones and a couple of big hitty ones)

Awesome … I can’t be there, but I look forward to seeing the photos!

I’d just go for camp-mat. Wrap the core in a 3-layer sandwich about an inch across. Bevel the corners. Then wrap the middle in 2 cylinders of foam, one after the other, before shaping the handles. Think of it as doing an extra thick mace-head, sans flanges.

(I found camp mat was difficult to wrap directly around a core, but its fine with a ~1 inch inner diameter; if you can get it to work with 3 cylinders, even better).

Having never made a mace head … Or anything vaguely weapon-y…

The appeal of the pool noodle is that it’s round. I wasn’t considering putting in a core. I don’t expect I’ll be using it as my weapon of choice. Just wanted it to be amusing.

Prema - it occurs to me that we really only have to make one and the other person can use it. If you’re too busy with Gordian Knot stuff why don’t you just borrow the one I make?

Well, if its coreless, you can also throw it!

That would be awesome. One less thing to take me away from writing

which larp are you making it for?

Defense of Nurumbug (Nuremburg? Nurumberg? Defense of that town wot begins wif N!) Does that work or clash with your game?

I bought my pool-noodle at lunch! Keen to see what I can do with it.

You could probably cut the big rolling part from one part of the pool noodle, then cut another part of the noodle into a longer rod shape and put it in through the middle and glue it in place, to act as a foam “core” and as the handles.

EDIT: doh - what the hell am I talking about? Aren’t pool noodles solid? I was thinking of insulation tubes that have a hole in the middle. If it’s a solid thick rod shape then just carving the handles out of it makes perfect sense.

On the topic of latexing a pool-noodle, my guess is that the original surface might latex okay because I think it’s got a kind of “skin” on it.

However any surfaces you cut are likely to expose porous foam underneath, which will need some sort of treatment like contact adhesive before latexing, otherwise they’ll soak up the latex. Safest option might be to spray/apply adhesive all over before latexing, and more thickly on any porous surfaces. It helps the latex stay on anyway, even with closed-cell foam.

Or just cap the ends with a disc of camp-mat around the handle.

Pool noodle is hollow, with a ~2cm space in the middle. or at least the stuff I got from my local $2 shop was.

Hmm, maybe they vary. I’m picturing them both ways now.

The pool noodle I purchased from Toy World is solid-as

Will report how things go. I plan on using an iron to close the foam a bit and provide a smoother surface for latexing but will also spray adhesive on it.

Exciting!
