For the first time since I was 5 I have a November without study or exams, so this year I’m going to do it! Anyone else up for the challenge?
And while you’re thinking about it, anyone got any plot ideas? I’m stumped!
Oh, how I wish I could. Bloody exams.
And no, my ideas - numerous though they be - are mine and mine alone. Nyar
I realized that I’ve got no excuses this year not to do it, so I’m doing it. I’m in the same boat as you though, I’ve only figured this out a couple of days ago. I’m Uncle Vanya on Nanowrimo by the way.
I’m writing a thesis this year
A thesis isn’t that different from a novel … lots of words, a tragic story of woe & toil, a hopeful conclusion, and it has to be reviewed by the evil editor/supervisor.
I’m going to be doing it this year. My Steampunk filled Armageddon weekend has inspired me. And it’s the first time I’ve had no exams to bother me, so I figure I have no excuse NOT to do it. Plus, it’ll give me something to do while I wait in airports. I’m Dragnew on their forums (surprise, surprise)
I haven’t actually joined the forums yet, since I’m still examinating til this afternoon, but I will be norectangulars on there too.
I got inspired because I’ve been watching a lot of Castle lately, and it’s got my writer’s fingers itching (which is, admittedly, only like 2 fingers!) Without an NYPD detective to follow around, I don’t think I could do a murder mystery though.
They say write what you know, but writing about a uni student who’s life is pretty ok atm is just kinda boring.
I crashed & burned when I tried it in '08 but won last year. WOOT!! So am going for it again this year and have roped my darling hubby into writing too so I’m not the only crazy one in the house.
I’m scribblesiece on the forums there.
In the past I have taken inspiration from my chracter/roleplaying game and extrapolated from there.
I’m in.
And I’ll be your writing buddy: nanowrimo.org/eng/user/665603
Synopsis: e-face
Four women rip off WETA Digital’s art assets to create a computer-generated porn company. They find outrageous success in the market but their ideological differences tear the group apart. Can they band together to keep their awful secret and still use their newfound power to do good in the world?
Group characters include: a pregnant wife (fired from WETA), an anarchist art student (comes up with the idea), a competitive business student (with daddy issues), and a positive-minded CGI artist with nothing to lose.
Hmmmm, I wonder…
Perhaps a gritty novelset in 19th Century America, about a girl from back East who goes on a epic journey West, meets a man (kills him later) and founds a certain little town we know so well…
I’ll be rolling with a dream I had quite a while back that somehow inspired Alan to create New Bretonia. I don’t know how he ended up there because the dream was steampunky western.
'Cept I’m an utter newb re: steampunk. facepalm Dave and David, I might be haranguing you for info. Like what kind of nifty stuff would a mad scientist even have in his house? What projects would he work on? What would townsfolk appeal to him to help with? Oh god how am I going to write 50,000 words about this stuff if I don’t even know this!!!
Okay, I’m better now.
ok i only found out about this last night, but you know waht sounds cool, i think that i will give it a go
Most probably crash and burn, but its also very motivating.
your right about the castle thing being inspiring… i think anyone would want to be a characters that nathan fillion play though, he makes it look like so much fun.
I’m doing it, but I’m cheating as I’m working with a partner. This will be the third time I’ve done it. The past two years I’ve done it the proper way (by myself). It’s hard to get your 1600 words a day sometimes that’s for sure!
My advice to first-timers = just write. Don’t edit as you go. Seriously. Save it for later. Just get the raw ideas out even if you break into ridiculously stupid dialogue or super-lame descriptions.
It’s good fun!
I’m in. Same username as here.
What could possibly go wrong?
I did it once and it was awesome. I’d love to do it again, but instead I will have a ThesisNoWriMo. That counts, yeah?
ThesisNoWriMo absolutely counts. Hey, if people can write fanfic, and even non-fiction, why not?
Also, a “cheat” I discovered last year: hyphenated words count as one word, not two, unless you put a space after the hyphen. (Real cheat: putting a space before and after the hyphen results in three “words”
)
Agh I have another two and a half hours before it’s November here!!!
Technically that would just be “TheWriMo” as you’re not writing a thesis novel
Yeah, they have a forum called ‘NaNoRebels’ for people writing anything that isn’t a novel, so it probably does count!
So, how are you guys doing? Anyone reached the bar yet? Anyone thrown in the towel?
