Link to ammusing David Mitchell video - ATTENTION PIRATES!

WARNING: NOT SAFE FOR WORK.

I have also been advised by somone I trust to state the following:
“Warning, potential sexual violation-triggering language”

Watch it and enjoy at the awesome of David Mitchell as he rants about how society feels its ok to say certain words together but that it is not ok to say them when they are appart.

Can this post be removed please? Or the title changed if the video it links to is more innocuous than it sounds like? It’s making me uncomfortable, to the point where I’ll be avoiding Diatribe until it slides off the New Posts section.

It’s about how the phrase “rape and pillage” is somehow funny/acceptable, when both of them separately are very much not okay. And how time seems to be able to change perceptions in such a way that something inherently distasteful can become humourous. The quote that is in the title of this thread is said very dryly. Best to change it though, for those who haven’t seen the clip before they see this thread. The actual name of the video clip is “The Phrase ‘Rape and Pillage’”.

I don’t understand why this wouldn’t be safe for work. O_o

Also this is the kind of thing that belongs in the chit chat forum. General is about larping matters.

Haha, that was excellent. Very droll.

I love English comedy, it’s so funny!

Sexual violence is prevalent in our society.

I read feminist blogs and forums, and there is significant agreement that some phrases can “trigger” re-experience of sexual violation.

The title of this thread is a candidate for being a triggering statement, especially because it has a pro-rape tone.

I watched enough of the video to grok the concept in it, so I don’t think the video is a problem per se. It’s about how the presenter thinks that “rape & pillage” is somehow less negative that simple “rape”. Or something.

Anyway, I would like the thread title to be change to:

An humorous look a how the word “pillage” provides a level of amelioration when used in conjunction with the word “rape”

Or something substantially similar.

Adam or an admin, please execute the above task before this thread does any more damage in our community.

I didn’t personally have a problem, but this community should feel comfortable for everyone.

That was both awesome and educational.

Loved it.

Thanks for changing the title. Given that you decided to opt for a title that does not contain as much information as the one I suggested, please amend to include the words “Warning, potential sexual violation-triggering language”.

This is an issue of safety around historical sexual violence. How you, or I, feel about this is irrelevant. Expressing your personal position that you are OK with potentially triggering language is unhelpful, and unlikely to create a situation where victims of sexual violation will feel that diatribe is a safe forum.

You may also wish to reflect on the fact that you acted from a position of both power and anonymity.

Thanks for the title change. Yes, ‘trigger warning’ is fairly standard in circles that discuss this stuff seriously.

Sorry, I can’t do this from my normal login, and when I use the admin login, it doesn’t say it’s Derek making the changes.

I tried the title you suggested, but there is a character limit to the title length, which it exceeded.

I couldn’t shorten it and have it still make sense, so I just picked something vanilla.

I believe that the youtube page has all the warnings anyone should need.

Derek

Actually - I feel that the pirates at Teonn and GM’s in general should be more aware about this kind of thing. I think the reaction from Stephanie probably highlights this quite well. So - Jog on!

I am not sure if you are aware of this or not but there is infact a letter cap on thread titles - I would have put more explanation into it but cannot.

Sorry for the Jolt. If it helps the video is actually him talking about how it should not be acceptable to say certain things at least - no more so than to say other things. It refers to how as time goes on certain events become more amicable in society for making jokes etc.

For example: The birtish hate the french - mostly refers to our war with France - you know the 100 year long one?

However it’s not yet ok to say: The British hate the Argentinians. - History has not moved along.

This is essentially the point that the comedian in the video is trying to make.

The Comedian is actually a BAFTA award winner and this show is paid for by the BBC.

I don’t disagree with this but this needed to be clearer in the initial post as original it was just a post about a funny video. The change in title does this as well though

I didn’t realise that my suggestion had exceeded the maximum title length, so thanks for trying.

In the interest of both brevity and safety, I agree with Steph’s suggestion of “trigger warning” would suffice in the future.

The matter seems to have been dealt with sufficiently but since my pirates got dragged into it, I do want to pipe up.

I have an appreciation of language history, and love hearing about the development of phrases and words, and the social contexts that spawned them. I understand that this video does not condone sexual violence towards women. But I do want to say I think this has nothing to do with larping, and especially not with my pirate group in Teonn - we have never said, nor will we ever say, that we’re intending to “rape and pillage”. Rape is an element of historical pirate culture we have not adopted nor endorsed, nor will we, and as thus have left it out of our languag.e

Please move this to chit chat.

Done.
