Link to ammusing David Mitchell video - ATTENTION PIRATES!
The matter seems to have been dealt with sufficiently but since my pirates got dragged into it, I do want to pipe up.

I have an appreciation of language history, and love hearing about the development of phrases and words, and the social contexts that spawned them. I understand that this video does not condone sexual violence towards women. But I do want to say I think this has nothing to do with larping, and especially not with my pirate group in Teonn - we have never said, nor will we ever say, that we’re intending to “rape and pillage”. Rape is an element of historical pirate culture we have not adopted nor endorsed, nor will we, and as thus have left it out of our languag.e

Please move this to chit chat.
This is not true I have heard many of the pirates and NPC’s in Teonn say “Pillage, rape and burn!” often accompanied by “Remeber - Pillage FIRST then burn!”

I’ve never heard any of the pirate crew or NPC’s say or even mention this phrase during Teonn in a way that portrays intention.

There is a difference between out of character banter that takes the mickey out of pirate culture (which is not what I was talking about) and a serious in character expression of intent. When you said this was relevant “to the pirates of Teonn”, I assumed you were referring to our characters. Just to be clear, we are not playing a group of marauding rapists nor do our characters have the intention of “raping and pillaging”.

So you agree that it is said then?

Can we move this back to General Discussion. A GM from Teonn has acknowledge that the phrase has been mentioned in a way that does not portray intention - however it has been said and thus does relate to a larp.

I never said you were - why are you getting so defensive with me. If I thought for a second that this was the aim of the pirates in Teonn I would not have waited until now to point out the error of your ways…

Adam,

can we just leave the thread here please. The video isn’t about larp. It’s an interesting, edgy, thought provoking comedy item that I enjoyed watching.

The original title shocked some people, and the ensuing conversation wasn’t really about larp, except in the loosest of possible ways, by virtue of this being a larping club.

I’ve just watched a few more items by David Mitchell, some funny, some less so. But really, they’re not about larp either.

This is chit-chat.

Derek

I’m glad I was here earlier; had the thread looked like this when I first saw it, hell, I wouldn’t have even bothered clicking. Would have missed out on some rather clever comedy.

This always happens when i post somthing interesting - people constantly fuck around on my posts - frankly getting sick of it.
