LARPs Logo competition

I have an idea, but not the time to actually do a good job on it…

What will the full name of LARPS be? I thought it was:

“Live Action Role Playing Society” possibly with “Inc” on the end when used formally.

But Steve has different words and hyphens and “New Zealand” in it above. I think simpler is better, and that “role playing” is more usual than “role play”.

Psychedelic Craig, have you been drinking the special Kool Aid again?

I promise that if you post submissions and Derek mocks you like this, I will delete Derek’s mocking at your request.

Now that Derek has opened the floor for heartfelt opinion, I’d like to say that I find his “drama masks” entry cliched. In a bad way.

Ph34r the scorching explosion of Ryan’s most passionate flames.
Of all the entries apart from mine, I like the direction that Stars is going best.

Edit: I quite like the angel wings on Steve’s design too, but not the rest so much. I like the implications of the wings and the stars - freedom, transcendence, individuality.
Aspirational, that was the word I was looking for.

The real kick in the guts was that he hosted them on MY fileserver, too.

By law we need to have the ‘Incorporated’ at the end once we become an incorporated society.

I think the full name is ‘New Zealand Live Action Role-Playing Society Incorporated’ although I’m quite happy with ‘Role Play’ instead.

I think we should have the ‘New Zealand’ the the beginning of the official name, to emphasise that we are a country-wide organisation, although ‘LARPS’ would be the simplified version.

If I remember correctly, there was a motion on the name in one of the meetings, but I cant find it in the minutes…

I particularly like the butterfly. If you really squint, you can almost see writing.

of course the size and colour can be changed to anything that’s requested.

the grunge one (#2) isn’t very serious, and i got kind of carried away. it was fun though.

since everyone seems to like stars, i guess a few could be added to whereever…meh.

oh, & sorry it’s in all lowercase but thats just how it is. maybe if someone bent my little finger back, i could perhaps make it all caps. eurgh.

kthx~

OK… well there we have it then…

These are beautiful, Chloë. Easy and enjoyable to look at, and they feel very creative.

Sure.

Bluck. Why introduce such ambiguity as having a long and shortened version right at the start?

I can’t make the meeting tonight (and don’t get a vote anyhow), but I’d just like to register my opinion that “New Zealand” is superfluous and sounds a bit pompous, and that I rather like the unhyphenated “Live Action Role Playing Society Incorporated” (as the forum is named on Diatribe) because it looks so clean on paper/screen. Hyphens reduce readability.

We (speaking as a member) absolutely don’t need “New Zealand” at the start to empahsis we’re national. It’s clear by the fact that no specific region is mentioned that we’re potentially national. There’s also the possibility that in the future we could be international (e.g. Aus) in which case it would be a liability.

I haven’t read that motion, or I would have mentioned my belated opposition. But if I remember correctly, you were keen for the organisation to be called NZLARP from the start (before we came up with LARPS) and no-one else agreed.

Craig, maybe this name discussion should be split and moved to the Live Action Role Playing Society forum.

Is that a wine-glass stain in the second one Chloe? That might be strangely appropriate…

I like 'em, especially the last one (is there a boot coming out the top of that S or did I just fail the Rorschach Inkblot Test?). They’re like Craig said.

My only concern is how you’d fit them on a content-driven website, because they’re so tall. Vertical space is premium when you’re trying to get across plenty of text. I know your site has tall intro graphics at the top and it looks sweet, but I think the LARPS site will be a little more focused on content.

I have a sneaky suspicion you could take other people’s ideas and make them look 10x better, too. Do mine! It’s got capital letters in it, but it’s not Satan. Unless you like Satan, then it can be if you want.

Speaking of such matters, can I suggest that the committee comes back and says “we like where you’re heading Mr/Ms X, can you make these changes or try this?” Maybe even combining ideas from more than one submission. That’s how a company really goes about getting a great piece of graphic design, by asking for a series of versions that take feedback into account. The graphic artists tend to hate it, but the results speak for themselves.

We need a shortened name because no-one would want to write out the whole long-hand name on cheques… In any case, we’re already abbreviating to LARPS.

As far as the hyphen goes, I don’t care one way or the other. Which would be the most grammatically correct? (Reaches for his dictionary…)

I still like having the ‘New Zealand’ at the start of the full, official name so that we’re properly identified in any International setting - but in normal usage you’d just omit it, just as you would normally omit the ‘Incorporated’, leaving the ‘LARPS’.

I’ve already checked with the bank that we’d be able to cash cheques made out to ‘LARPS’ or ‘LARPS Inc’ as well as the full name, whatever it may end up as.

Perhaps a dark, vaugly gothic dungeonish background to reflect the LARP roots in D&D, Vampire, Mordavia etc…

I like this one best so far.

Simple, bold, and you wonder who just got shot!

tee hee. yes, that’s a wine glass…or coffee cup…or something.

i don’t see the boot, but who knows^^~

and you’re right. i need more practice at making graphics for more profesional sites (unlike mine). if i end up being able to make the final version, i will try my utmost to keep the stuff compact & content suited.
or we could force craig to design the site around the graphic. t’YARRR~

just kidding, craig.

anyways, i’m muchly open to suggestions and things and i’m definitly not a graphic artist so i have no problem moulding to a concensus~

goes to look at ryans logo

BTW: i have splatters in horizontal form(& most directions^^) if anyone else likes that one as well.

I’m not a fan of anything too complex, and I don’t really like the splatters…

Not counting my own entry (of course) I think I like the ‘stars’ one best so far, although it has some problems in B&W.
