Kaiju

Me and Craig once had the idea of filling a room with cardbaord skyscrapers, and then having a party/game where everyone dresses up as giant monsters and wrecks the city.

Oddly, someone else seems to be on the same crack:

kaiju.com

They seem to be more about performance than game, but their background information is totally suitable.

Wow, that’s something.

I think it would suit a “party” rather than a game as such. It would be the kind of legendary stunt that would make people join the society because they heard about this crazy party where everyone came as monsters and fought in a cardboard city.

Anyone got a whole lot of mindless early Japanese rock music?

Umm… I have J-pop… does that count?

oooh, ooh, I have some.

don’t ask why :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m keen on this again. Let’s try and make it happen in Winter.

There’ll be two teams. The teams will battle in downtown Neo-Tokyo for control of the world (loser buys the drinks). There will be cardboard buildings, special effects, betting, and mega chaos. It will be preceeded and followed by a dance party.

Those that come in big monster suits will be invited to battle, with the winning team keeping the world (or what’s left of it). I have no idea how the points will work, but there will definately be important buildings to protect/ destroy for each team.

Think along the same lines as battling robots on TV. But giant monsters.

You have to include a couple of these RC choppers

Plese, please, please let me build a Cthulhu Costume, he is giant, and would love a good fight.

Oh man, I would LOVE for Clthulu to be there!

Sounds like a blast. If we held it outside in a huge field or other safe place we could even burn down some of the buildings.

If we have it inside small amounts of dry ice and other special effects come to mind.

A smoke machine could be interesting. We had one for a flatwarming once. I fell asleep on thecouch and when I woke up I couldn’t see the floor. It was quite surreal.

Smaller cleverly built buildings or radio towers etc could be used as weapons.

I’d love to see the mordavian golem there. Or even the werewolf. Now that I think about it wasn’t there a 10ft tall monster on stilts? Although a gundam would probably have more style points associated with it. Optimous prime would just be embaressing though as would voltron.

If you wanted a second part to the challenge you could always include a water rumble in the nearest pool. Obviously the costumes would have to be either entirely discarded or at least substituted with other things at that point but you could have all kinds of boats to capsize and treasures on the ocean floor etc.

Anyway enough random thoughts. Hope you like them.

I’d be in for this, no idea what my monster would be yet though.

I’ve got some Japanese anime music that may be suitable and some other stuff.

This sounds like wicked fun.

I have dibs on “Giant amorphous blob”! lol

Total agreement

Dont forget the giant robots.

I can get my hands on 200 hours of J rock. My personal favourite is Hide. followed closly by Xjapan.

This would be so cool.

What you’d need though would be LOADS of big cardboard boxes. Spray paint them, and paint with ‘windows’ as buildings. Find a venue with high (3m+) ceilings. Build up tall buildings with aid of tape and stepladder. Add smoke machine, maybe small boxes painted as cars on the ‘roads’.
Set up scoring based on building destruction. Have combat rules.

Youd need a LOT of boxes, preferably ones that can fold flat for storage, and preferably similar sizes. Supermarkets might be a good source. Or electrical shops (eg, old TV boxes and old computer monitor boxes…)

Actually, I think a hall would be a better venue for this, as you’d be able to build out and up (if you can get 2m+ skyscrapers, and cover an area several metres wide, it would add to the atmosphere.

Don’t forget the Remote Control Helicoptors.

I actually have a godzilla mask.

Cardboard boxes are very light and reasonably tough. I think polystyrene would work better for building skyscrapers.

We need a bridge as well.

What kind of scale would be best?

and some gi joe figures for the army trying to kill the monster.

Polystyrene would be good, but youd need an awful lot of it plus theres disposal afterwards.

I’d say that about 5cm = 1 building floor would be good, where 1floor==4m (IE, 80:1). Then, a 2m building would have about 40 floors (160m) - not too bad. ‘Godzilla’ would then be about 35 floors tall…

This would also mean you could make cars using kitchen matchboxes - great for stamping on!

As a comparison, the Empire State is 380m (including radio mast) so that would be just over 4m in this scale - possible in a church hall, for example. The Chrysler building at 320m would be exactly 4m in our scale, and this is a whisker shorter than Auckland’s very own Sky Tower.

If you had a place with high enough ceilings, you could put radio masts etc on top of buildings to get a good city look.

Alternatively, use a 2.5cm/1floor scale to get 60-floor-high monsters and use normal matchboxes as cars (and have 80+ floor skyscrapers). Seems a bit tall, though, as I’d be able to look over the top of the worlds tallest building at that scale.

Would be nice, but these things are bitches to control - and far too dangerous to have whizzing about people’s heads, I think. Shame because they’d fit in with a 80:1 scale fairly well. Also, they’d almost certainly end up broken or damaged…

If you could get one at $40 it might be worth it as you could write that off for the game if it was broken, and just have it flying high (if youve got a nice big hall for the game)
