Introduce yourself

Buddhist Ninjas? Who would’ve thunk it?

Both the mask and helmet are originally from Trademe: trademe.co.nz/Sports/Paintba … 153801.htm

Awesomeness can easily be explained away with additions to the character backstory

We all know that the Chinese are ninjas and were secretly developing experimental armour and weaponry. I would probably say that the group my character leads made a raid on a Chinese freight convoy and pilfered a few of those suits from storage, and modified them for own use…
It actually resembles the black armour the Chinese riot thugs wear while suppressing indigenous peoples:

Only your version is less bulky, more techno and so much cooler. It’s a very nice piece of work.

(Possibly this whole power-suit discussion should be split by a moderator into its own thread in the Gear forum.)

Hey I’m Gemma. I’m from Hamilton. I’m a poor poor student (7th form through TCS)

I’m also the newbie that watched Role Models, jumped on google, and was at my first larp (knightshade) like three days later xD Never heard of LARP before then, never played D&D or anything like it. So my first larp was very much ‘wow what am I doing…’ and I looked lost and confused for the most part. But I had lots of fun, I promise!

Before anyone else suggests it, I’m going to go to Chimera. The amount of people telling me to go made it very hard to resist  Registered and just getting together the money to pay.

Yay! Welcome Gemma. I’m glad you had a good time and we will see you at Chimera. If it helps at all, most of us felt pretty lost and confused at our first larp.

Kara (the tree)

Hey Gemma, good to have you with us! Yay for fun, and there will be certainly more fun coming at Chimera :unamused:
(I remember my first larp, I was so very scared when something started attack from the darkness, eeeep!)

Lucy (bellydancer with big fake bruise given by the tree)

Hey Gemma, really pleased to see you on Diatribe and glad to have you on board for Chimera!

Anna (the undead Egyptian chick who was hopeless in the kitchen)
the undead Egyptian chick
I say we need more of this!

Okay, unexpected popularity. Here’s some photos:

I’m the one on the left. It’s a pity nobody had a proper camera, because I really like my make up. It was all the nice white bodypaint with the big black Eye of Horus make up. Lucy said I was the prettiest undead she’d ever seen!

It’s ok. We’ll just make you up again sometime and take photos. With an actual camera, rather than my phone. Which appears to have something on the lens making all the photos fuzzy and haloed. /goes to find teeny cloth and glass cleaner.

Ok everyone. Unless it’s specifically mentioned there’s a photographer coming, bring cameras to larps, even if you only get them out for 10min. Otherwise there will be GM unhappiness, and this is a Bad Thing ™.

I dunno, Porl looks like a serious contender for that spot…

Yeah, when Porl was still applying his makeup he looked out of his room to make some comment, we all stared in amazement, Gaffy even fell down stricken by his irresistable beauty (though Gaf’s happy laugh down on the floor was quite hysterical).

But I still stand for Anna as the prettiest undead, she had such a smooth porcelaine skin and a piercing look of the dark eyes. 8)

Also, my personal opinion, Porl looked very Japanese, every time I saw him I was thinking of Samurais, must be that hairstyle and the clothes…

hi all well im Aaron im in porirua near wellington and I saw this phenomenon first on the movie rolemodels as you all may guess. so point me in the right direction, since I really want to get involved and learn all there is. hopefully local stuff, and maybe in the future ill consider other regions.

just a lil about me. im a musician (drummer) im obsessed with the band 30 seconds to mars. umm im into most movies, favourite actor is jared leto or course haha. im a huge wrestling fan too which may be an advantage to my arsenal of skills. im a poet and novice song writer. im emo too so dont judge me b4 you get to know me :stuck_out_tongue:

well thats about it

I haven’t seen Role Models, but the LARPs in Wellington tend to be what we call “theatre-style” - prewritten characters, mostly social, with combat (to the extent it is necessary) resolved by paper-scissors-rock or other abstract mechanics, rather than actually hitting people with latex swords. Live-combat style games (where you do hit people with latex swords etc) never really took off here, though there are a couple of people who have tried it floating around.

There is one large game (50 - 60 players) at KapCon on Wellington anniversary Weekend each year, and sometimes there are other smaller games as well (there used to be a regular spot in the calendar in May for a 30-player LARP, but no-one has been inspired to run one recently. Though maybe if we bully Adrexia into re-running Southern Seas…)

The best place to learn about the local scene is NZRaG, though the focus there is mostly on tabletop roleplaying.

Hi Aaron - welcome to Diatribe. While there aren’t a lot of frequent larps in your area (as far as I know), it’s not that hard to start your own. Especially if you wanted to start something like the game on Role Models, which I gather is quite focussed on battles. There are lots of people here who could give you advice on that. Which part of larp appeals to you - fighting with foam weapons, costume, roleplaying a character, or what?

Ah ha! Again Role Models FTW!

That movie is now responsible for a good few people signing on to diatribes.
So welcome Aaron.

Sadly there isn’t much combat larp in Wellington from what I understand but if you can bothered getting to Hamilton or Auckland theres always the Knightshade and St.Wolfgangs campaigns.

We have a few Wellingtonians coming up for St.Wolfgangs at least!

Keep your eyes posted for weekend events, they’ll make your potential travel north more worth while!

everything, the physical, roleplaying, acting, costumes and weaponry. im a huge fantasy fan too so i did read over knightshade and may enter that one. but yea im mostly into medievil, fantasy, modern warfare.

ill come along to kapcon too and look around

Yeah, if I were you I’d go to the Kapcon larp (it’s not usually fantasy or live combat, but the roleplaying is excellent), and try to get up to one of the Auckland/Hamilton medieval/fantasy weekends like Knightshade or St Wolfgang’s Vampire Hunters. Then once you’ve had some personal experience of some larps, try starting one in your area. It’s totally doable. NZRaG might be a good place to post to drum up interest.

stella,

Typical Originality In A Bottle
Except i smile a lot, which make me not so typical :stuck_out_tongue:

I come from a family where the most sophisticated thing said is often along the lines of "Bro, lets go getta meeaaannn feed eh?"
But i still love them!
New to larp, but have been obsessed with stuff like it since the first LOTR movie came out.
Been doing archery for about four years,
horse riding for two,
and hopefully beginning weaponry training at an academy two years ahead of schedule

…yeh!

Welcome to a whole new world Stella, hopefully you find it as much fun as the rest of us. Obviously you’re a fantasy fan, but have you had a browse through the forums to see what you might want to have a go at first? Also www.nzlarps.org has some mini sites for most of the games, and then there’s the photos which are scattered all over
