I have been wanting so badly to be part of a regular larp ever since i started playing dungeons and dragons with my partner! I saw this forum and just had to join, so hi all!!
Its a shame i live in such a small area but if anyone is, or knows someone from nelson that is interested in starting a group etc id love to hear from you… Or anyone else on the forum for that matter just to say hi!!!
Hi mate - great to hear from someone outside the big cities.
You’re not that far from Wellington, and it sounds lot of larps are coming up there. Would you consider flying to Welly for larp - maybe if it was a whole weekend?
There is also Kapcon in Wellington, which is mostly a tabletop roleplaying convention but also has a big larp on the Saturday night.
Welcome to Diatribe:) Wellington is your best bet for larps, there’s some coming up. Alternatively, you could fly up to Auckland for a weekend game such as St Wolfgang’s next month.
btw. Attention Duelists. My Hair recognises your Username’s Reference source
My limey sense is tingling!!!
I think i might consider traveling at some point… i could make a holiday of it and go to Wellington… I think my partner has family there… I actually found out about LARP when i saw it on role models (the movie) and nearly screamed with excitement. I thought it looked like so much fun… Before that i didn’t really know much about LARP except for my partner telling me about people who play dungeons and dragons but are their character the whole time and dress up. I might not be very good at it though as I’ve never done it before… the closest i have gotten was a murder mystery party… (i was a witch… it was great, I’m even considering a pirate one for my reception as we are having a pirate wedding!)
If you like acting and interacting then you’ll fit right in, so don’t worry about experience, you’ll pick it up as you go, and we’re a real helpful bunch anyways, so don’t hesitate to question and query.
Thanks
That’s a heartening thought. I

Just in case you haven’t already seen it, there was a clip on 20/20 about us a couple of weeks ago (should still be available on the TVNZ website) to give you some more background.
My little sister has been in a couple of Larps now, and she lives in Nelson. She hasn’t actually Larped in Nelson though. I’m sure she would if she had the chance.
Christchurch is also close-ish and has larps every now and then. Usually as part of Buckets of Dice. saga.org.nz/
Stephanie yes i did see that 20/20 segment, i stayed up late especially to watch it! (with a young baby if you can, you should probably be sleeping) That was you guys? I was really excited about that segment because i wasnt sure if there was larping in NZ untill then… I’d only seen it on role models and wondered wistfully if id ever take part in one. Watching that was what got me looking for a group in the first place
Yea that was us at our annual event called Chimera - we run it every year in august (for the last two years
) We have already booked the site for 2010
Wow! I’m impressed! that looked like the best fun i could possibly imagine!
And that was this website that the featured as well? You must have had lots of new interest after that segment… (me included!)
It must have been great to have shown the wider community what you love to do!
The 20/20 article was really good, but some people still need that little push to get them coming to a game.
In my case i think i just needed to know that dressing up and pretending to be someone else is a normal and popular pass time
Utterly normal. I wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t.
yes, that’s my icon, yes, i’m dressed as a tree…
A tree? i thought you looked more like a woodland elf or a dryad…
Wildings from Knightshade - are essentially treefolk - and what are Dryads? - treefolk
For sure, if you can make it to KapConin Wellington in January, that would be awesome. There’ll be several Larps there - a big SF one on Saturday night called Reunion, and smaller ones running in the regular streams. All theatre-style, I think, but there are plans to introduce regular Larps to Wellington that have a live combat component to them as well. There’s also a shitload of tabletop roleplaying, from traditional-style D&D to the newest Indie titles, through an interestingly batty spectrum of other games. There’ll also be a bunch of people there who frequent these boards and are interested in Larping. Kapcon is a good way to meet people with similar interests and try out something new that you may love at the same time.
One thing i was interested in though is what do people who have children do when larping? especially young babies? do partners look after them? because if we traveled i think both me and my partner would take part.
Thats what grandparents are for
