Great Chimera moments

Like just now, watching the Super Sparkle Action Princess footage and cackling. :smiling_imp: (You guys rocked.)54

I had a lot of great moments, but I think for me the best game was The Discarded. It had a really powerful story to it, and everyone there was seriously digging into their characters and taking emotional risks and being right there in the moment. I thought you were all awesome. Thank you Tigger (and damn you for making me cry.)

I also have a vote for best costuming of the con, which you pretty much have to share a room with someone to find out about. My sister Cat had the best underwear in the convention. I’m not kidding. She had corsets and garter belts and pointy bras because they looked more sinister and chemises with delicate lace and was just generally In Period, All the Time, in a really subtle cool way.

Thank you all, I had a wonderful time.

Mine was really a continuous moment really, running All the President’s Zombies, when all the damn players preempted my notes and where constantly throwing me for a six, but I had the time of my life. Thanks for making this short fat chucklehead’s day.
Also, the people in the Soap Opera LARP, we should get together for some unprotected hand sex sometime…

It really would be impossible to choose a favourite moment for all of Chimera, but one of them had to be President Porl organizing a metaphorical “Hunting Accident” for Vice President Certainly-Not-Dick-Cheney (i.e, Me) by blowing up Air Force Two in All The President’s Zombies.
Another great moment was, well… all of Betrothals and Betrayals, although Lord Foxglove’s comments about Dwarves being all the rage in Italy (instead of Canes or pockets) were especially amusing.
Being dragged away to be sodomized by demons for all eternity in Bad Dreams was another highlight- I just had to be a hero. Apparently shooting someone who drowned a bus full of school children is now a sin. Bah.

And my Refuge Stories? Well, I think they’re best saved for another post.

Great moment was playing Bitter tears where everything started out alright. Yet the more we played the game the more we realised we had NO idea what was actually going on.
That plus refuge seeing the guy turn around round to 12 odd guns all pointing at him and just blowing him to the dust xD

And all because I forgot my cane…

Best moment was the rain dance. Being the village shaman responsible for appeasing the volcano god and having THUNDER was just too cool. Every cloud has a silver lining

I can’t wait to see it

One of my best moments was in Truth, Justice and Spandex! The big villain was being taken down after the way to defeat him was found and one of the other characters (The Flamingo) had larpsafe balls which were tossed to deal damage. So as this massive threat is dying, spouting out his melodramatic death monologue, one of these balls flys out of nowhere and bounces off the side of his head. Can’t a guy even die in peace?

I liked figuring out my character’s plot for Betrothals and Betrayals ahead of time, and then being proved right. It was so hard to remain lovelorn and not just be smug for the whole rest of the game. And though the long-overdue glomp did not come after a dramatic dash across the room as I had been planning for weeks (since I was already standing next to said glompee), it was still pretty damn cool.

Then getting turned into a vampire and saying, “goddamn Vanya” because, although I had no previous hint that vampires were even part of this game, in the second I became one I knew that somehow it was Vanya’s fault. But hey, I get to marry the man I love, and spend the rest of my life (which is now forever) with him. I figure the two of us won that game.

Much Ado About Something was just utter crack and I think we completely lost the plot, but I quite enjoyed my tense relationship with Macbeth, and even though I didn’t like him very much, I was still rather put out and a teensy bit jealous when I look across and see him kneeling to Helena and declaring that he loves her and has to have her. And for the rest of the game he kept standing near her and trying to touch her and I wanted to go over there and slap somebody. In hindsight I should have started snogging Tybalt.

Hmm, best moment at Chimera…

If you don’t know what I’m referring to, you went to bed too early on Saturday night :stuck_out_tongue:

Of course, my favourite LARP-related moment was from Truth, Justice and Spandex! - not sure which one, but it would have to either be the first time I raged (“Retest! Retest! I can keep this up all day, retest!”) when I started punching my friends into walls and the like, or the second time when I beat the Bronze Boarder to death with my bare hands. SERVED HIM RIGHT.

Stephanie, if you’d like me to sit in with you when editing to help you piece together what all the shots are meant to be, just let me know

So many good moments over the weekend- being disarmed in Vox just when I was going to shoot myself (I was sat sobbing over my dead alien husband and NOBODY WAS TALKING TO ME).

Vanya walking back into the room with someone at Betrothals wiping off his mouth and smacking his lips, and what TheAmazingCatherine was going to give me in return for my visiting her, which was very beautiful and very appropriate.

“If it can’t be covered in 2 inches of foam, it isn’t LARPsafe”

Shooting Tetrajak in Refuge was fun, but my favourite moment was when I noticed the ‘ugly stepsister’ character giving me the evils and deliberately walking up to her and saying ‘evenin’ ma’am’- as I walked off I heard her turn to the other Souther Belle she was with and express great indignance that she’d been spoken to by, (I think this is what I heard) “one of them”.

Blair and his awesome capage in Super Sparkle, and so much great stuff from the actors which will turn up in the footage- especially Davy ‘The Rock’ Tamihere’s idea of subtle commentary on what drugs do. Also sidling over to Stephanie as the Producer’s Assistant whenever the director’s attention was elsewhere and doing my best to stab him in the back.

And finally, annoying as many people as I could in Bitter Tears, or at least making them really uncomfortable by barging in on private conversations.

Also my room-mates were excellent fun. On Saturday night after Refuge our room was all about ‘we have to go to bed! BUT THAT WAS AWESOME! But we have to sleep! BUT THAT WAS AWESOME…’

Playing Mr (alien) Miagi in Vox was great fun! Handing out sage advice regarding the troubles of others and getting amused at the inspired looks on the other characters’ faces and being told “you are very wise, Vorax, I only hope I am as wise as you one day.”

Standing in a room full of powerful mages while an hideous abyssal demon sits in the room causing the floorboards to burn while they all stand around attending to their own business as if it wasn’t there XD

Watching the other players in R.J.'s Birthday slip into OOC grins as I spoke in a texan accent and acted as the father of the birthday boy.

Playing the nastiest piece of shit this side of refuge come to depose his superior, kill his superior’s daughter, and f*** this little s***hole up like there was no tomorrow. Then falling for a lovely dame in the middle of it and deciding that perhaps impressing this girl might be a better course of action than pursuing my escaped slaves who had joined a gang, only to get shot dead by them at the end.

Sitting with others in the mess hall later and listening to accounts of all the awesome moments of the days before, caught in grins and great laughter.

Sharing the room with two great people who were as excited as we were about the event.

The moment at the end of refuge, after thanks had been given out to the organisers, when Anna was about to walk off stage and got ushered back in to be applauded and cheered so enthusiastically that it bought her to tears. I was so happy.

I forgot a couple from outside the games- Tigger as Captain Italy coming up to a group of us in our beautiful Regency gowns and saying perhaps we could all have a nice party later, whilst constantly drawing attention to his trousers- “You like-a the package- is ok! Is still there!”. Also Gaffy dressed as the Stone Golem marauding through the courtyard, and myself and the darling husband doing our best ‘Blazing Saddles’ re-enactment before Refuge.

It’s one of the things I loved about Chimera that the things going on outside of the games themselves were tremendous fun as well.

That was indeed epic

I think one of my favourite moments were during Prayers on a Porcelain Altar where we kept making bad jokes, remember what we had done, start laughing and then immediately start all cringing and shushing each other.

Actually, I have another great moment. In Jade Empire, it was written into my character’s background that she had warmer than normal feelings towards another shujenga of her clan, because he’d like, saved her life, and healed her, and been really nice about it, and all that stuff. (Duty, yes, it must be duty that makes her think about him so often. Duty, yes, yes, of course.) Really early in the game before the player party had really had time to talk to each other, I’d gone into a clearing to investigate some stuff, and then I stood up, turned around, and there he was, unexpectedly on the other side of the clearing, smiling at me. It was a really subtle moment of coolness.

Incidentally, flirting when you’re Japanese is really hard. No wonder they have so much cracky angsty anime/manga - how else can they vent?

I think it was the book (and possibly also the movie) “Life of a Geisha” where the main character was being given tips on how to flirt. She was told “when I want a man to take an interest in my I let him get a glimpse of the inside of my exposed wrist”. In contrast, the popular themes in anime/manga would suggest rape is just another way to say hello :open_mouth:

There has to be a happy middle ground somewhere…

[quote=“Derek”] In contrast, the popular themes in anime/manga would suggest rape is just another way to say hello :open_mouth:

There is a vast middle ground of manga full of warm happy fluffy hugs etc. etc. I’d ask what you’d been reading but… no.

I have two favourite moments (among many fine ones). The first was in Betrothals. I was one of three sisters, the younger sister said something silly, and me and Second Sister (Ellen Couch)'s eyes just met, and we sighed a little, as if this dynamic had been going on for years.

The second was in Super Sparkle. We’d written the game so the two directors, and many of the staff, had drastically different ideas of how things should be run. There could have been explosions, fireworks, somebody standing on a figurative pile of corpses shouting I wun!! I WUn! What happened was that everybody gathered around, worked together, resolved their differences by talk and compromise, and won for everybody. And oh god, Glorious Grace the Fangirl deciding to make her own spinoff and acquiring the blackmail material to have a good shot at it…

The player that most impressed me (we shared a lot of games) was Beth St Claire, who kicked arse and took names in every game I saw her in.

The player that I absolutely loved to roleplay with was Ellen Couch, who is subtle, and good, and just… someone I developed a rapport with.

Warning, the following post contains a Wall-of-Text™. For those who like to TLDR, please skip to the summary at the end.

Well, it seems there is a lot to get through, I guess chronological order will give me some kind of organisation…

Friday evening, walking into the room during the social gather, and as an extrovert, feeling the energy in the room rushing into me. Ahh, such a good feeling, and indicative of the Weekend of Legend to come.

Quest to the Forest of Darkness: Simon the Sorcerer. Loved Team Human who I started with, especially our devoted clerics and our incredibly stealthy ninjas. Seriously, both rogues in the human team kept vanishing and reappearing, but the best Rogue moment was Ben, playing the rogue Ben, slipping down a bank in the mud onto his bum: "Found a trap! Disarmed it!"
Running into my character’s mother, an Undead, who the rest of my team wanted to kill, and they succeeded for a half hour. Lying bleeding in a chapel while waiting for the clerics to finish their Goal completing chant and get over an heal me was fun, and it made the character really consider his own mortality.
So much so, that he decided to accept his mother and her undead friend’s offer of immortality, and went down the path of evil. Killed fey and elves, carried off their bodies, ran from vengeful elves, ended up alone and with only lightning bolt left!
Team Orc. Already on friendly terms with the orcs, fleeing Simon stumbled upon them as they were about to start a summoning ritual, and asking for their protection, he helped them achieve their goal: Summon a demon who wreaks havoc upon the world! But the orcs, and the undead, and Simon, the soon to be lich, were spared!
And so, the best moment was at game end, when I got to unleash bouts of maniacal laughter, and join in a rousing shout of “Waaaaaagh!”

Nexus, Gathering at Foxlight: Dante
Best moment here was when my character’s dark secrets were all being exposed and revealed, and he summoned the Abyss demon who he had dealings with. The demon walks into the room, and no mage moves to kill it, in fact, the only one looking like he’s ready to fight it is Dante, who’s still trying to maintain the facade of not knowing the demon.
Then, Cassandra casting a spell on Dante to make him only tell truth, wow, that was a good Paper Rock Sissors by her player,Yuli. Having Scott Kelly as Summerthaw say afterwards how hard it was even after that spell to pin things on Dante was rather edifying.
Finally, the epic moment of the game’s end, with Dante dueling a Nazi mage, pulling reality around himself to add to his destructive power, (causing the characters of the current Nexus game no end of grief), and everything going black.

Happy Birthday RJ: GM
My first time GMing a larp, this was a Freeform Murder Mystery set in Texan 1980. First favourite moment was where I had to recruit half my players on the spot. Then, the larp turned out so swimmingly well, it was as if each player, last minute or not, was meant for the character that they recieved. Everyone did so well.
Standout moments from that larp: Saskia playing a really seductive younger sister, who kept taking gentlemen out of sight, and then returning five minutes later, both with ruffled hair, and one with more information. Nick managing to host the event as a Texan oil Millionare, and doing a “Mighty Fine Accent”. Hamish, with his wit and ability to dodge questions by planting multiple stories about his character’s true nature with the trustworthy characters!
Was a good afternoon.

Refuge: Well, those moments are best written in the other thread, so check there.

Sunday morning was fantastic. Had to join the Dead Man’s Chest at last minute’s notice. Well, the best moment there had to be when Anna calls out to her players: “Who can help Rob kit up to be a pirate?” The players scatter, and within moments I have options for what to wear. The game itself was epic, with Derek keeping us nice and wet with his rain dances. I loved especially being Salamanca, (Tigger’s) Don Inigo’s valet. We mocked all the non spanish constantly (that’s everyone else), tried to woo ladies, spritedly sprinted up volcanoes together ahead of the slow others. The best part was when Cheryl’s character insulted Don Inigo, and Salamanca jumps into her face, and goes from a bad Spanish accent to full on yelling at her in faux Spanish! Salamanca would do anything for his Don… towards the end of the game I started wondering if anyone else had noticed just how much Salamanca liked him though… I tried to subtly put that homoerotic subtext in, even if no-one noticed, it was still fun to do.

Jade Empire: Hatou Chiao, a very skilled bushi, the heir to the Shinken Miyamoto Bennosuke style of twin sword fighting. Best moments: forming a cohesive team with my other Wave clan mates, dueling Derek’s npc Hiro, and losing with honour. Running into NPC lizardfolk, one of whom (Kerry) was speaking Chinese, and understanding most of what he was actually saying, even though most of the characters had no clue. I especially enjoyed appeasing a spirit, Derek again. I had to match him stroke for stroke through a kata, and it was quite tough, but apparently it looked really good to those watching, when at the end Hatou-sama is performing a kata in sync with a Spirit of Law and Order, matching strokes through the just-damp morning air.
Recieving the best roleplayer in this game was fantastic, because I had just been having fun, and not trying to roleplay, I was just doing roleplay. So thanks folks, that was a highlight.

The people. The people are always key in all of life for me, and so it is with larp. I met so many new friends, and developed relationships further with existing friends. So many people were helpful with costumes, kind with their words of encouragement, and there was a wonderful selection of people to roleplay with, a large helping of really compentant roleplayers having a ball of a time.
Standout roleplayers for me: Hamish, both his portrayal in Happy Birthday RJ, and his mage in 1940s who ‘preferred the company of gentlemen’. “Fancy a walk with a handsome gentleman?” Dante asks Lucius.
Nick O’Keefe from Wellington: Hitting it off with this fellow in and out of character was awesome. It started when he made a Monty Python quote and I finished it, that’s a sure sign of awesome there. In character, loved his roleplay, and he made Happy Birthday RJ for a number of people.
Scott Kelly as Summerthaw, he was a real challenge to play against.
Sridat Kota, the best Mastigos I know, even when not playing mage. His wheeling and dealing in refuge, his dodging the issue in Jade empire, his backstab in Dead Man’s chest - It’s always a privaledge playing with him.
The new folks from HBRJ: TK, Saskia, Yuli, Emma, Jess; they all were fantastic in that game and in all the others I saw them in, great stuff for their first time out Larping.
And we cannot forget that moment and those people from the beach trip, 3am, and stealing the clothes of those who ran in skinny dipping! The tradition is now set!

In summary: A great weekend meeting new friends, and roleplaying with new and old friends alike.
In shorter summary:The whole weekend was Awesome.

reads Rob’s list
Can’t stop smiling at the epic and awesomeness
Is inspired to write his own comprehensive post, to make up for the inadequacy of his previous one.

So, in an attempt to be adequate in the face of Rob’s epic post, I feel I should do a big post about the weekend. It was so amazing, and I’m looking forward to reminiscing. So… Here comes my Wall-of-Text ™!

Arriving on Friday was a great start, to a great weekend. Walking in, remembering back to last year’s Chimera, thinking “It’s been a year. I don’t think I’m a New Guy anymore”, and Anna saying something similar. Catching up friends, meeting new people, it was fantastic. The guys in the same room as me were all awesome, too. And then, we got to the games.

Bad Dreams. AAAAAHHHH, Bad Dreams was brilliant. Now, I love Nick Cave. Love him, Love him Love him. My favourite musician of all time. So on seeing that the game was inspired by Nick Cave, back at the selection process, I knew it would be awesome. What I didn’t quite realize was how awesome it would be. Playing Henry Lee was fun. Had some great role playing with Juliet (who was my beloved Kathleen), a few good moments with my character’s Brother (who I didn’t know would be there IC. However, due to being a Nick Cave fan, my OOC senses were tingling :stuck_out_tongue: ). But I think my favourite moment of the game was when I shot the woman who killed me in the head to make sure she wasn’t going to stand back up, then deciding to play the Hero and shoot Lottie (Prema), The Curse of Millhaven, mass murderer and all around crazy person, while she was threatening someone with a sword. Which then led to me being dragged off to Hell, kicking and screaming (although some of that screaming was on the part of Juliet). Didn’t get a lot of interaction with other players, but I heard their stories later, and it sounds like there was an incredible game going on while I was otherwise preoccupied. Oh, and Wong? You are truly a monster.

Betrothals and Betrayals. B&B may have been my favourite game of the weekend (although, really, it’s impossible to choose just one). Playing the mysterious Nobleman, Lord Ambergris, was awesome. I got to be all enigmatic and suchlike. So much fun. And I loved my costume (apparently, so did other people. Wasn’t expecting to get voted Best Costume, thanks to all who thought I deserved it!)- I didn’t think I’d fit the Breeches, as they wouldn’t zip at all when I tried them on earlier in the week. Surprisingly enough, they fit me perfectly on the day! Perhaps someone up there really wanted to see me in tight pants. Strange person, whoever they may be. The only problem I had with my costume was that I had no pockets. So I stored my character sheet and treasure pouch in my Top Hat. The high point of the game was, for me, the big reveal that I was, in fact, Captain Robert Wesley, returning to marry his True Love (who was played fantastically). And then being turned into a vampire shortly afterwards. Which was kinda surprising. Ah well, just means I get to spend all eternity with my lovely Wife (whom I Vamped whilst running off to Gretna Green). Hopefully in a castle on a dark moor somewhere, where I could Brood (brooding being rather fitting for both a Vampire and a Romantic Hero).

New Horizons was where I got to have the most sheer fun. In most of the other games, I was playing a good guy, a fine, upstanding young gentleman. So it was great to be able to be Ivan Kalashnikov, Russian Mobster and something of a bastard. Wandering around the room, speaking loudly in an atrocious Russian accent, threatening to break Kerry’s character’s legs, planning on having Muppet’s character’s kids kidnapped if he didn’t turn over his drug trade to me, and, of course, complaining about the lack of vodka. The Vampire part surprised me, but was quite a nice change of pace, and led to some combat, which was ridiculously fun. Surviving (albeit with a slightly gaping neck wound) really did top the game off wonderfully. Here’s hoping that the charming Mr Kalashnikov continues on happily with his life.

Refuge Post is in, appropriately enough, the Refuge Post.

All The Presidents Zombies- Another game where I wasn’t a good guy. In fact, I was Nyarlathotep… err, I mean, I was a Dick Cheney expy. Although I didn’t actually do anything too evil. I couldn’t choose a best moment for the game, really. It was all so much fun. Getting blown up, along with the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of State (I think), on Air Force Two was slightly surprising though. I should’ve known not to use such big words around the President. It confuses him. Perhaps I should’ve taken him on a hunting trip with me…

And the final game of the convention, Jade Empire. The weather Gods were a little wishy-washy, but at least the rain wasn’t too heavy, and the sun was out as often as it wasn’t. I really enjoyed getting to be a, well, a Spy. Again, got some good roleplaying in (and also got engaged. Again. I sense a theme for this weekend. 3 out of 6 games involved me getting a wife sometime in the near future). I don’t remember too much of the game, sadly, as it was the end of the weekend, and I was running on close to empty. What I do remember being the most awesome thing ever (slight exaggeration, but, seriously, it’s only very slight) was the Dragon. ZOMFG, the Dragon was so brilliant. The undulating, and the riddle game, and just the fact that there was a huge fucking dragon standing in front of us just made the perfect climax to a game of which, while I don’t remember details, the overall impression was of epic win-ness. And, again, thanks to everyone who voted for me for Best Costume. I was flattered (tying with Rob was awesome, because I both voted for and admired his costume). Of course, the Dragon deserved best costume over me, but, as crew, I suspect it was ineligible.

All up, it was easily the best weekend I’ve had all year. Meeting new people, getting to roleplay with people I have long admired as roleplayers, and just… well, everything! Amazing weekend. Everyone on the organization team, everyone who I interacted with in-game ( Especially Juliet, Jason and Sierra, you three were awesome in everything I was in with you, thank you so much), everyone I interacted with out of the games (particularly the guys in the same bunk-room as me- Blair, Michael and Zane), everyone who voted for me for Best Costume over the weekend (equal Runner-Up? Colour me speechless!) and everyone who was there at all. You’re all brilliant!

Hmmm my weekend. Well here is my wall of text.

Started with meeting most of the Wellington Crew at the airports (Wellington and Auckland) and making our way to the venue and then catching up with friends from Auckland, finding a cabin, unloading the trailer and getting all set up.

First session up for me was running Diamond Geezers (9 players this time), not a bad run, went differently to the Wellington run which was expected, found a few things I would change or do differently. Derek was a determined man as Moses and Hannah was very funny with the Teddy Bear in her hands winding up the other gangsters, lots of Catiness amongst the girls. The gang decided to go their seperate ways, half quitting and half going on to another job.

Saturday morning I played in Nexus. I admit I know very little about the Nexus game in Auckland or Mage Live in general. I was playing Summerthaw a mage who deals with the fae, seen as a bit of a trickster and buffoon by most of the convenant, but secretly he had been trying to track down evil in Auckland. While Hamish’s character was supposed to be my main suspect, so I decided getting close and investigating him might be useful, of course keeping up my cover, so much flirting and innuendo about other characters their insued. While in this mode as well as serious investigation I also managed to spread many rumours about talking and dancing bushes which spread around. Then at some point in the game the fact my head had been messed with and that I was missing memories came up, and people were brought in to help me, after some traumatic memories coming back, I finally discovered Dante (Robza)(dashing hero of the Convenant) was actually an evil bastard working with hell. Much pointing and glaring and circling each other ensued.

Second up on Saturday was The Discarded. This meant a quick lunch and lots of putting on make up and trying not to burn myself too badly. Written and run by Tigger this was my most emotional adn morally challenging games of the con and I had a great gouup of people who I eperienced it with, they all put effort into looking bad and trying to dig into how their characters were feeling. Some were vocal others were subtle, some moments shared with all the crew and others were “intimate” moments with one or 2 others. I really enjoyed it and don’t want to give much away in case it gets run again.

And then it was time for Refuge, the main event. As the bad ass sheriff coming in to clean up the town I had a fantastic family around me (players and characters)(even if some may have wanted to kill me IC). We came in early and got group photos done which helped becuase after that we were very rarely altogether, well except for when the bar opened again . We proceeded to move around the room trying to keep the peace and find enough eidence to put people away ((In a big LARP like this, you don’t really want to kill other characters or put them out of it in the first part of the game, so you tend to try and come up with other methods)). I had some really interesting conversations and interactions with many people and got involved in a lot of plots (I was run off my feet). Stand outs for me were my dealings with Dave the Undertaker as he got steadily drunk, Kara as Ruby my lover and how everyone else was trying to set us up with others, finally managing to Kill the Bear, and the look on Willem’s face as the New kids on the Block tried to kidnap the Govenor only to look up and notice they had walked into the guns of Rick and Ruby who happened to be outside (beating up a China man).

Another night of not much sleep and my cold really kicking in at this stage and I was due to run Diamond Geezers again, but with 2 no shows I only had 4 players. I suggested to my players they jump into games they would enjoy more and promised it to run it another time for them. I used the time to pack everything up, clean the cabin and hang out and talk to firends and discuss writting some more big Larps.

Final game for me was Feast of Crow’s. I was not sure how this was going to go, I was tired and pretty sick, but was also playing Lucifer and I so hate playing evil characters . I had a lot of fun, whether it was having conversations with Tigger as leader of the Angels and discussing the state of the world, corrupting your nuns/angels into having almost pornagraphic photos taken with male models (both Craig and Walter got into their roles with far too much joy). Being a complete coward and hiding under a table and being joined by models, photographers and angels. And finally getting people to sell their lives and souls to me.

All in all a fantastic weekend, will be back next year and looks like already commited to 2 games.
