Games for Chimera 2012

After the success of Little Dipping’s Great Experiement I am looking at writing a small series of one off Victorian mystery style larps.

That and I really really would love to run a saturday night size larp that was based on Toy Story. It is a genre that is virtually limitless! I am thinking off putting together a team to work on this, so if anyone is interested then please PM me for more details!!!
My preference would be for the band to practice a couple of tracks before the Chimera weekend so they’d sound more authentic on the day. Trickier if we have geographically isolated band members, but not insurmountable. So, being in the band means learning a couple of (original) tracks before Chimera, and then having lots of fun around practicing them at the actual game. Kind of like getting ready for a gig…
I heard of a game run overseas that used Rock Band controllers as instruments, so they didn’t have to worry about the actual musical ability of the players.

off the top of my head,
maybe a Gilbert and Sullivanesque larp,
or a Captain Scarlet (same sort of era as Stingray and Thunderbirds) but with scary aliens ( “this is the voice of the mysterions…” ) oooh spooky.

I was thinking of running a tournament, without pre-generated characters, and with a reasonably simple combat system. I’ve done a few tournaments in my time and I think I can fill a full game slot with some interesting variants

Interesting concept, useful if you can’t find actual musos to fulfil the musician roles.

When you say “reasonably simple combat system”, would that be the 1 Hit Point ™ system ? Either way, I’d be keen.

I will of course be right in for this. Tourney? hell yeah.

After being in a few nz written larps this year I am thinking of writing one too.
although it will take a bit of time to narrow down all of my thoughts that were running through my head on Sunday night as I Tried to sleep!

Yes please

That would be “Rock Band Murder Mystery” by Enigma Live Game Labs. Sadly, not publicly available, but there are play reports floating round on the web.

I keep thinking that I should ask some of the Intercon crowd for copies of their games to run at Chimera - but I never get round to it.

This could provide some inspiration:

I could be tempted to either compete or help you with that one Derek. Vague feeling I may have almost enough experience with tournaments :stuck_out_tongue: :smiling_imp: :stuck_out_tongue:

Firstly - Exquire you need to identify yourself as I have no idea which brand new super special secret squirrel friend of mine you are…

Secondly - Zara - I would be honoured to join your team  Fun!! Just can’t for about four weeks as I have a feature screenplay (writer-for-hire gig) to complete by end of Sept and haven’t started it yet… he he he I do like a tight deadline.

I love this so much - how cool is the excitement that is palpable on these diatribe pages

This is like the classic question about larp combat, transferred to playing music instead. Player skill or character skill? I don’t think there’s any right answer, just depends on whether you want to let any player portray any character (by using character skill) or let some people enjoy exercising their real skills.

If you go with real skills Mike, then I for one would be happy to learn a couple of songs and do a few band practices. If we made recordings then someone in Wellington or elsewhere could learn their part and play along… or play the person who is new to the band and has to learn on the day.

I plan to start learning the guitar, so if you had a spot for an “enthusiastic groupie who knows all the bands songs, who is thrown in as a last minute replacment of the guitarist cause something bad happened to him/her” then I could be your guy! LOL

Just a couple of things:

Ex rock band singer right here, and very interested in your LARP idea Mike!

And Tourney? Sounds like an awesome opportunity to throw all sorts of interesting towns folk in there!

Lastly, i completely agree about the Defense of Nurumburg. I think this game has gone completely under the radar as an idea in general and it was an excellent opportunity for noobie players, or just general non combatant players, to learn how to fight and create characters. It pretty much taught people how to combat larp in every aspect of the game, and i really like how they used the whole “more health if together” rule to teach new players that you’re not going to die so easily if you LARP in numbers!
I think a large scale version of the Defense of Nurumburg should be run again, and to be honest Adam and his wife (sorry i didn’t catch your name!) were great GMs, who even taught people larp bow fighting (which ended up being extremely effective in the fight, i got nailed).

I would strongly suggest it, especially at the likes of Chimera where there are so many new players.

not so much a game but if we ever wanted to add “skills workshops” as a professional costume designer (not a costumier) I would be more than willing to do a workshop on basic costuming theory and help with costume ideas for people…

If it’s all about combat, you may find a significant gender bias in your signups. Combat-only games tend to attract a lot more guys than girls. Not a criticism, just something to be aware of. Even Forgotten Gods attracted about 2/3 male signups I think, possibly from the live combat effect.

Yep, I’m aware of the natural gender bias that competitive combat has. That’s fine, there are a couple of females that I’m sure will be happy to mix it up with the lads and it’s not like there wouldn’t be other options…

Gender balance will be fine if at the same slot someone runs a Hen Party game, so you get lotsa guys for one game and lotsa girls for another, and nobody is left out

I imagine a tournament game could appeal to both genders, if you write characters for spectators- make it into a game that’s both combat oriented and social, depending on what you’d rather play. Knights jockeying for their lady’s favour, nobles making wagers, politics and romance happening, maybe a juicy murder or two, that sort of thing.
