YES!! Animal & Fairy Tale are both good ideas… I’m excited already!
Snicker A furry larp! I wonder how many hidden furries we have amongst the NZ larping community.
I’m keen on either the fairy tale or sci-fi larps. The Greek/Roman one sounds interesting, but I’m still an avid sci-fi fan. I’d be keen to help out with writing if it’s fantastic enough. Simple roman and greek politics wouldn’t interest me.
Simple politics, surely that’s an oxymoron…
“Imagine I’m a politician… now imagine I’m an idiot, oh, but I repeat myself.” - Oscar Wilde
EDIT: Okay if no Tigger Leia - How about Walter?
Moving away from discussions of furries and men in metal slave-girl bikinis…
I’m caught by the twisted fairytales idea. I may have imagined the “twisted” part, but that would be very cool.
Space opera could also be loads of fun, but agree it would have to be carefully considered, since badly done futuristic is… bad.
To be fair badly done LARPs are… well, bad.
Sooo… I’ll start a new thread on this. “How to run a good LARP.”
Not saying I’m an expert, but hoping to gather opinionated opinions… of wannabe experts.
To be fair, I think Kara was talking about set dressing. The Flagship will have $400-$500 for set dressing, which gets spent really fast.
Sorry, wasn’t all that clear was I? Haybales and fake Victoriana cost money. Fake futuristic that looks decent is likely to be far more expensive and difficult.
Since you mentioned it, though, I wouldn’t mind peoples thoughts on what makes a ‘good’ larp and a ‘bad’ one. I suspect there’ll be as many opinions as there are larpers, but I’ve never written or GM’d a larp and would have no clue where to start…
I shall mosey on over and take a look at your new thread.
You mean like a LARP version of ‘Into the Woods’? I was actually pondering that idea myself.
If not for the Flagship LARP, Anna, maybe you and I could have a go at writing it anyway?
I’m not sure what ‘Into the Woods’ is, though a quick google seems to indicate it’s kind of what I was thinking along the lines of. Now, my team has placed a ban on me writing any games for Chimera (something about combusting from stress, I dunno) but if we were to get it done four months out from Chimera, we’d be in business. If the idea doesn’t get nabbed, we will talk
That’s what recursion is for. For example: A science fiction-y LARP wherein the characters are attendees of a theme party based on how they imagine some era of the(ir) past was.
I like the idea of a whole bunch of unfamiliar people coming together for the flagship, like the fairy tale one mentioned about.
What about something like that were people from various era’s in history, or maybe even fiction or movies or something like that, all get lumped together for some reason?
I like fairy tale idea with characters that are known in culture rather than just made-up. Made-up characters can be cool, but they don’t have that awesomeness of recognition "ooooh, I know this person, I read about them, and I am playing them now!"
For same reason the beginning of 20th century larp with spies and wars and political discussions and intrigues and actors would have my vote - similar to Flight of the Hindenburg, but 20 years earlier.
I’m not into sci-fi/space/super-heros, but just because I’m generally not into that stuff.
Agree re Roman has more events than Greece. How about “The last day of Pompeii”? And in the end it can all explode on volcano, we even have a volcanoholic in our crowd, get him to do special effects… or maybe not… hm…
If Tigger wanna play Leia he shouldn’t be discriminated, where is your political correctness?
Also, he is a talented chap and he can pose:

Sci-Fi themed on Firefly maybe? Cowboys in space?

‘Into the Woods’ is a Sondheim musical in which a whole bunch of different fairytales get mixed up together, because for different reasons they all have to go, well, into the woods. At the end of the first half, all of them have their happy endings. This being Sondheim (of ‘Sweeney Todd’ fame), you can probably guess what happens in the second half.
Edited to change to: if it doesn’t get nabbed, perhaps we could make a start (get characters and aims mostly down) before the Kapcon Flagship, and do serious logistical things after Kapcon?
Sticking with the idea of going into the future, how about a fantastic post-apocalyptic setting, something along the lines of Gamma World? Not just straight-up apocalpse survivors a la Mad Max, but instead a desolated world of radioactive mutants, psychics, sentient animals and plants, insane robots, androids, etc.
Among other things, a post-apocalyptic theme is much easier to set-dress than a distant futuristic one. Grungy is generally cheap. Also, because the setting is tied to Earth there can be more references to “historical” things players know about, so there is an element of familiarity even though the characters and setting are original.
I’m not keen on Fairy Tales for the flagship larp next year…
But only because I’ve wanted to write a larp based on the Fables graphic novels for a while now
Ah well, if it does get run, at least I’ll get to play in it
I was just going to suggest a Fables-based larp! Don’t know if it’ll stretch to 100 people though.
Dark Fae, Fairy Tales and Animals all work together really well - both animals and fae feature in fiary tales, and you could put any spin on it eg dark and grim or light-hearted and over the top.
Perhaps everyone’s in one place because of some kind of fae trick?
Ooh, I’m liking the idea of fairy tales, with so many cultures to choose from it could easily cover 100+ people. And costumes will be amazing.
Guys, we can’t do fae next year, Battlecry 2011 is already doing it.
Would Fairy Tales without Fae be a possibility?
Although I think even if it’s not the Flagship, a Fables/Fairy Tale LARP would be incredibly awesome.
We could look at Fairy Tales for 2012 flagship, that would be far enough away from this year’s Battlecry. I know a couple of people in my team would be keen. I’d have to see what the others thought.
