Flagship LARP 2011?

Getting 100 interesting characters in one theme is a big ask. “Restaurant at the end of Universe” could bring together all sorts of Sci Fi ideas. Pirates and Romans (and maybe a few Gauls?) could also be a big enough area to mine ideas from. I think Greek is not mainstream enough.
I could be interested in joining the writing team [she says hesitantly, thinking of how busy life is at the moment.]

I’m very keen on sci-fi, although thinking about Greek times would be even better; not only could we have people from the surrounding area, we could also include all the mythology that goes with the Greeks.

Oh, I meant dwarf-planet ie. asteroid, not a planet full of dwarfs :stuck_out_tongue:

My suggestion is at least semi-serious. I’d think about leading it…

And anyone who’s read ‘Deep Secret’ by Diana Wynne Jones knows that there can be a lot of other really cool stuff going on at a convention.

The ideas being floated are all good- though the mythology thing in Greek or Roman setting would have to be handled carefully- after all, how would one work deities into the Kick-Ass system? But that’s something that has been discussed on the threads for the 2011 Kapcon LARP.

Space Opera does sound fun, too.

But I’ve got to be honest, I think the Convention idea is my favourite so far. So many possibilities for mayhem- but GOOD mayhem.

The flagship larp still hasn’t been any of the medieval / Arthurian / pulp fantasy genre yet.

For all genres heading into Sci-Fi check out Tales from the Floating Vagabond - an awesome tabletop RPG about a tavern on an asteroid that had two doors… one went to the carpark, and the other was inter-dimensionally connected to EVERY SINGLE TAVERN IN THE MULTIVERSE ACROSS ALL TIMES!!!

But it would detract from the semi-serious Space Opera I was semi-envisioning what with Space Nazis and Bipedal Labrador Detectives…

I was thinking more Fifth Element-esq… oh and little/no weaponry. Don’t get me wrong, guns are fun - but I prefer a social LARP… with thinking-brain-like skills. Togas could certainly feature - religion too could make a comeback appearance in the future…

Oh and do I have a volunteer for Princess Leia in slave garb? Just a thought (Recurring since I was like 8!!!)

Fifth Element-esque could be pretty cool…

I’ll put my hand up for that. Do i get extra powers?

Well someone has to top my (lack of) costume.

Sexual Magnetism I presume. Or invisibility due to an inability for anyone being able to look directly at you due to the hilarity of it all?

Can I say I prefer the idea of a planet of dwarves??? hahahahaaaaa…

I’d love a game where I could X-Dress, either as a x-dressing charactor, or just play a female role… :open_mouth:

Going on the Roman/Greek/Gaul thing, what would people feel about an Astrix and Obelix themed flagship?

But for a more serious theme, Roman/Greek currently has my vote.

I personally think Roman has more scope than Greek. Roman has a lot of scope for politics, religious squabbling, military factions, visitors from other places in the Empire, Emperors, Emperor’s families, the Senate, scandal, trade. We could even base it on a real historical point, and see if we could change history

With Greek, it has slightly less political scope, and is slightly less epic, but I think it could really easily include heroic figures, demi-gods, and even gods in human form. You could have representatives from different city states (Sparta, Athens, Corinth, Thebes etc), maybe set it at the Oracle of Delphi (which is where everything seems to start in mythology)

Another idea that someone kicked around last year was an Academy Award event - maybe the after party or something.

I personally like the idea of a space opera, it would be a good departure from the trend of the flagship being historical thus far.
That being said the genre has scope enough for things like space Romans and pirates.
In fact aren’t space pirates mandatory in any space opera?

The Roman thing could be cool and including some gauls who perhaps may have a magic potion could be fun too

Epic space fantastic opera with a transdimensional inn/pub at the end of the universe has so much potential. It would be my first choice. There is scope here for an infinite variety of characters, from almost any setting (pirates, zombies, aliens, time travellers, “space soliders”). Is the answer 42? Infinite improbability. And the sci-fi aspect doesn’t need to be over played, we can easily justify a low tech setting. And if we want ship travel, just put the technology (a computer etc) in the back of the gear trailer and tow it down the road.

Of course the Asterix/Roman idea has my vote too… I pre-cast Derek as Asterix just because he is short and full of fight. Sorry Derek, you’re going blond for this one! Start growing the moustache now! Also there is so much scope. Again, pirates were common in those books.

I already have an Asterix costume.

I reckon you could do Asterix perfectly well with 20 players. It would work well as a romp through the woods, fighting Romans and so forth.

Space opera has a lot more scope, plenty for a 100-character game. I imagine something in the Star Wars/Flash Gordon genre when I hear that though, not Douglas Adams. Big, flashy, space fantasy with Real Men, Scantily Clad Women, Comedy Side-Kick robots, Ugly Aliens, and Capital “E” Evil Villains.

I do actually have the costume to do Princess Leia.

Putting in a vote for dark Land of Faerie, though.

True, Asterix has plenty of scope as a smaller live combat larp. The wheels were certainly turning when I saw that potential. If no one else offers, this will be one I’d offer to do myself. (Might have to join a line though)

As to Douglas Adams, I agree, I had the same thoughts BUT my point is that we don’t have to self limit to a particular stereotype of SCI-FI, we can, with a little care and thought cater from anything from Buck Rogers to Star Wars to Fifth Element. Throw in some Raymond E Fiest hall of worlds type interdimensional stuff and theres virtually no limit to what could be included.
