Drama. Do you?

Actually, and I apologise for putting my psych papers to use, it’s not.

Bipolar disorder is a condition that causes the sufferer to swing between extreme depression and a state of manic euphoria. It has nothing to do with different personalities, it’s about the most extreme mood swings you can imagine.

Schizophrenia is commonly mistaken for multiple personality disorder, because it comes from the Greek words for ‘split mind’. Schizophrenia has a large variety of symptoms and is more common in males than females. I can’t quite explain it, but I recommend looking it up on Wikipedia if you are interested.

Disociative Identity Disorder is what is commonly called multiple personality disorder and in most cases, the other personalities aren’t aware of each other’s presence.

Um. I apologise for destroying the conversation. I thought Derek’s quip was quite amusing
One of the symptoms of Schizophrenia is creating fictional characters in your mind, doesnt necesarrily have to be you but you often create your own little world. And this is sypmtoms with bad schizophrenia.

I know all about D.I.D. but did not want to go into it here.

:stuck_out_tongue:

(sorry will stop posting out of topic now)

Drama…drama…drama…doo de doo dee

Yeah I played in this larp game recently…!

Larp is a fusion of a lot of different stuff, but I reckon dramatic ability is chief among them. Looking at games like Couples it’d be pretty hard to argue against that.

When you are acting you get the script and you develop the character based on the the clues the director and the writer gives you.

In Larping you develop the character up yourself and you get clues on the script from the GM and the NPC’s.

it is like opening a box with a crowbar that is on the inside.

Do you believe in the psychological theory of individual/cultural social constructionism? I do, and I think in larp when we get a caricature of community going (complete with super-fast and shockingly spontaneous character development), social constructionism goes into overdrive. So it’s not you driving your character, it’s everyone else. Controlling your own destiny? Ha!

Your definition of acting sounds more like putting yourself inside a box with a crowbar and having someone else paint the outside of the box while you shake around inside.

Let’s not distinguish between “acting” and “larping” though, unless you want to go down that path. Let’s go between “script acting” and “improv” which seem more akin to your descriptions (sorry if I’m being postmodernist here).

In scracting (let’s call it that!) someone else has determined the means to an end, or at least, “what happens”. They’ve usually tried to have their “what happens” make at least some sense from some perspective.

In larping, we usually start with a setting and a bunch of characters and find out what happens just from that. We usually have artificially produced random elements which have often been pre-determined and are often left to actual chance. For example, MAYDAY had a few pre-determined events (your ticking bombs will blow) at pre-determined times. Was everything else left to the players? No, there was also a part played by chance!

In scracting, a director has to engineer every bit of chance that has been pre-determined so their story comes out right. How much were MAYDAY players developed when they were rushing somewhere and couldn’t cross the road due to traffic? Not much, but probably some. I’d go so far as to say that good actors in larp would make a more believable reality than good actors in scracts… except that both of these things are usually far removed from percieved reality and closer to an ideal or entertainment sandbox reality.

That’s all I have to say.

Which is probably only a good thing if you’re inside the box to begin with.

Hey, there is an idea for a game!

OK the short version;
one year of drama school at south seas film and television school.
twelve short films
seven stage plays
one tv commercial
guest spot on power rangers
several promotional gigs

should have just said Yes
Have you voted in the poll? That sounds like “a lot” to me, but nobody has given that answer.

I’m blown away that no who has answered rates themselves as having done a lot of drama.
I’m blown away that no who has answered rates themselves as having done a lot of drama.
Same! I figured once-a-fortnight counts as “a lot”, though.

Yeah, I didn’t mean for it to be taken as making your living from drama or anything. Just having done more than a bit, it being a serious interest, that sort of thing.

i just voted.

we are doing what now?

You know sometimes i only understand 1% of what you guys say half the time.

But hey check out those space suits nifty aren’t they

Hey Carl, remember SPQR? Does that count?

Groooaaannn!!!

Please i am trying to forget it :unamused:
dont get me wrong we rocked, but the director :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

which reminds me do any of the legion that were on that gig have a copy I have never seen it.

and anyway i thought about including all the wrok i have done since i joined the KD but realistically there is not enough room on the forum, and i did say it was the short version.

I’ve just added an extra gig of bandwidth, feel free.

oh my god i would not know where to begin :open_mouth:

i think i will just stick with what i have done since acting school, it is easier.

trying to think of all the stuff i have done over the last seven years would just be too hard.

OK. Post it.

Ahhh I did

See

That stuff! I assure you there’s enough room on the forum. Tell us that too!

jeez come on man :unamused:

you are expecting me to remember things that i did years ago.

ok here is a couple that i do remember.

"This is it"
Mellenium celebration held in the domain, stunt fighting before an audience of 200,000 odd.

And “Song of the Hunted” feature film directed by Peter Haynes i played one of the palace guard.

Is THAT why I practically went on strike when they MADE us watch Shortland Street in English?..! :unamused:

We only saw the rushes.

Do you remember the two hours to do 2, 2 scenes!!! :imp:

When the director went to pick up the bbq from his dads place, the stunt coordinator went, “Wait, wait, Now he’s gone, lets do some real work!”

We had 1/2 the movie in the can by the time he got back in 2 hours time.

Best Quotes from filming?
1: Alan, stalk towards the camera, no stalk, be animalistic, you are organic, as opposed to the mechanical legion, who represent the technology … etc, etc (the director went on for 10 min in this vein while I lay on the ground.)
2: Jamie, scream when you’re stabbed! (Jamie, “Ah” falls over.) No, scream, in anguish! (Jamie, “Ah”) No no no. You’re being sliced open, you are ij agony! Your life is ending! (Jamie “Ah”) 12 takes later, the stunt co-ord says “I think thats as good as you’re gonna get, next!” :smiling_imp:
