My explanation is why I think XP systems are common in general.
But personally, I’m not the biggest fan. I like a small amount of this kind of advancement (for the positive reasons I gave more than for any sense of accomplishment), but I don’t like the complexity of having large numbers of skills and a lot of rules complexity, or the PC power differentials, that tends to come with a system with lots of XP advancement. I’m not really keen on it in tabletop, but I’m especially not keen on it in larp, where all the relevant rules and the system state of your character have to be carried around in your head. It’s not that I think it’s badwrongfun or anything, it’s just not to my taste.
