Writing implements - Fantasy/Medieval

I am looking for some simple easy to carry around writing implements. Quill and ink is likely going to be extremely problematic. Any advice from anyone? On the cheap if possible.

I got a large quilled feather and broke a normal pen and glued the wee ink vial into the quill of the feather. instant quill pen without the need for ink. Is that the sort of thing you had in mind?

Other option is a rough wooden pencil, the sort you get in organic ranges. Or use a knife to scrape off the outside of a normal pencil to give the rough wooden look .

The authentic way to go is wax tablets and a stylus. You can buy a set here, or if you google you can find instructions to make them.

Alternatively, ballpoint pen in a quill (cut to shape) is a good way to go.

With Lyle Gruff, for the first couple of games, I had a little wooden box that held my ink, inkwell, nibs, paper & pens.

The biggest fear I had, was suddenly having to flee in terror, and the (generally glass) ink bottle smashing from the motion.

Didn’t happen, but I still worried.

The pen-in-a-feather trick looks really good, and is what I used in later games (although, I bought mine from a shop called Red Letter Day. There’s one in Ponsonby, and one up in Matakana.)

I think Emily makes them, as well? She had some awesome-looking ones for sale at the market last game.

A charcoal pencil may also be something to look into.
