Would you go to an event that allowed hard shots?

Would you attend a larp that allows harder blows?

Just wanted to get an idea of who would attend or avoid events that allow harder blows.

This is a bit different to Carl’s poll on preferences. That’s about what style you prefer, this is about whether a certain style would stop you attending. Much like the light head shot poll.

If it was just getting hit harder I would say no as physical pain tends to totally break my IC state of mind. However a bit more of an ‘anything goes’ style of combat I would definently be up for.

All my characters would have to be complete cowards who avoided combat at any cost…

SCA style hard blows not really but as steve said decent blow delivered with speed and timing hell yeah.

I actually think that some of the people throw leg blows as hard at Mordavia as some people do in SCA combat. The weapon is different, so it hurts much less, but the speed is pretty much the same.

SCA combat often looks worse than it is. Most training sessions I don’t even break bones

Your kidding right :open_mouth: i have Never been hit in mordavia as hard you hit me in SCA combat.

The speed is why i had to stop SCA heavy fighting, the torque was playing hell with my shoulders, which is why I am liking the Silver style we do at AS&S now, because you using the body as well as the arm.

(I fully realise that most of my problem may have been bad technique :unamused: )

So now you’re saying we’re all torque huh!

An apology sir, I demand an apology!

An event offering such combat style would be a stong(er) incentive for me to come over to NZ. Put me down as keen for any such events :smiling_imp:

i said no not because i dont mind getting hit hard, but because the weapons we use get damaged enough at present. i can only see one advantage to hitting harder, and that would be that larger weapons and things like flails could be used.

If I did come along to something like that it would definately be as a non combatty sort of character at first so I could get a sense of how hard the hits were without being in the thick of the fighting.
Hard hits being encouraged in a LARP would definately put me off somewhat, I might go along if it the game had a particuarly promising story or setting.

If it’s larp weapons, yeah sure! They’re padded! It’d be so much more real! Not only would you easily feel blows that hit you, but you wouldn’t have to hold back from feeling like you actually are trying to kill someone.

Torque… as in power, speed, brute grunt.

as in this…

know what i mean

I probably wouldn’t attend.

  1. I don’t like bruises.
  2. I prefer the roleplaying and plot aspects of larping, and I suspect they wouldn’t just be in the back-seat at such an event, but stuffed into the trunk with the spare tyre.
  3. Hell - I always get cut down quickly anyway. Why do I need more pain?

Would be interested in a game where some sort of grappling was allowed.

The funny thing about grappling in Mordavia is that if we’d allowed it, a lot of uses of Binding magic would have been useless.

Some guy protected in a binding circle? Just strip the weapons and scrolls off the best wrestler you’ve got and send them in to get him out. Kinda points out the silly game-specificness of some of the bindings. I mean, Bind Weapons? Like fists can’t be weapons?

When Porl played Jack at Nightmare Circle we had to get him to lie down so we could put something on his chest. He was immune to weapons and we couldn’t talk him into lying down, so I jumped on him.

I’m not sure what the rules actually are for that type of thing in Nightmare Circle. When I suggested in character that we do this, nobody objected…

After I did an impersonation of a poodle trying to bring down a bull, some other people jumped him as well and we eventually managed to bring him down.

The nice thing is, nobody was trying to do tricky wrist locks or sticking their fingers in each others eyes. My bow tie was a little crooked afterwards, but other than that it was all very civilised.

It all seemed very appropriate and in the spirit of the game at the time.

Yeah, there was a moment in Mordavia: Endgame where two NPCs started grabbing each other in anger - when the elves accused the villagers of sabotaging the earthworks. Hans looked totally mental, grabbed Jakob by the scruff and started shaking him, Jakob grabs him back, all the NPCs and PCs in the area joined in and for a moment it looked like it was turning into a rolling maul. Then it broke up.

Totally appropriate given how heated the IC emotions were, felt very real. Not really kosher given the Mordavia rules on grappling, but it was between two NPCs so no-one was going to argue about rules, and it really captured the feelings of that moment.

I think that consensual grappling done with care is pretty reasonable and adds to the believability of an event. Dunno how many people would be put off by it though.

I’m quite comfortable with grappling, even calculated tackling, pushing, wrestling style stuff. I think what made that part you’re talking about alright, Ryan, is that it wasn’t a “combat” situation. That, and you’re right - it was totally IC, consensual and calculated.

Ironic that NPC + NPC interactions just happen smoothly without letting rules get in the way. Why can’t everyone just do that?

While out of combat situations in Mordavia there are far fewer rules to think about, so maybe that’s how they got ignored (to the benefit of the game) here.

When we finally do the combat test event, I’d like to try combat with no rules whatsoever. That’s not to say that we go around smacking people in the head as hard as we can - it’s just to say that we assess each situation ourselves and act accordingly.

during, i thnk it was Hollow Kingdom, at the start of the game I had an NPC take a swing at me, i was already in the right position so I wrapped his arms and swung him into the wall of the inn, and used my pommel to take him out,

we didn’t argue about it, and the npc didn’t make an issue out of it, and it was very satisfying to use techniques i had learned in sword club in a real situation.

As long as they are done safely and there are very clear “Tap out” signals to prevent injuries I wouldn’t object.

A similiar thing happened at the last Nightmare Circle game too. Porl playing the same character, having a brawl with Gareth who was playing one of the creatures of Shub-Niggurath. Man, they went for it! I was watching from behind the safety of a locked door, and it looked spectacular. Tigger, watching from behind a bush about twenty metres away, said the same. Jack ended up winning.

I would more interested in controlled grappling than headshots.
