What Should I Do Next? A Noob Question

I really enjoyed the Black Hart of Camelot LARP and I want to do another one soon but there is so much happening. I saw some photos of Teonn but I don’t have an awesome costume or face paint. And I believe that is one that I have to create my own character for? I don’t even know where to start with that. Do LARPs have character classes like D&D or are they more free-form?

Anyway, I know that Teonn is all full up so I’m hoping there is another game I can join in Auckland soon. One that is OK for inexperienced LARPers. Also, where should I start getting a costume? Did you guys start with op-shops or is there a better way to go about it? Maybe I should pay my fashion designer sister to make me something. Hm. No, I’m a bit too poor for that at the moment.

So much to do and I’ll all over the place looking at foam swords and realistic period costumes and going “OMG! Want!”

First, check if these three things are true:

  1. You have a simple outfit of black clothing, (trousers & shirt) and sturdy (can run on mud/grass/sand) shoes.
  2. You have the weekend of 30th November to 2nd December free.
  3. You have a spare $60 to spend.

If these are true, come to Teonn this weekend as crew. This means your food, costume and weapons are provided, and the GMs tell you what character you’re going to play, and when. You’re one of the NPCs! You’ll fight, and also talk, and do a bunch of different roles over 2.5 days!

Else if these are not true - keep asking around after the next larp, because there’s always something on the horizon.

What Rob said is true. Teonn is the biggest larp run in Auckland, and its THIS weekend. So almost everyone is focusing on that at the moment. Coming along as Crew is a brilliant way to meet lots of larpers, see how it all works, ask people for costume advice etc and generally have a great time.

This is as close to the general fantasy style game that we currently have. Check out their website with the rules, and explanation of the world/races etc. teonn.squarespace.com/

There is a bit of adjustment in timescales from tabletop roleplaying, where a game once a week is quite common. The scale of Larp campaigns tend to be 2 weekend games during the year (summer + winter), plus possibly an afternoon/evening game in between.

Next year we are starting the Friday Night games, which are more in the style of Black Hart, but a wide array of genres.

I agree crew is a great way to start.

As for costume I started at Op Shops and its usualy my first stop for a new costume. Careful selection of Items and visiting the right Op shops (and not being afraid to look in the womens section if your a guy) can work wonders. Pick up some basics, a little modification and accessories…and you’ll be good to go.

Agree with what all the others said. Come crew. It’s what I first did for Teonn, and it’s a great way to get involved.

In terms of costume, a pair of dark trousers is a good start. Nothing spoils the atmosphere like seeing someone in jeans and sneakers. Dark lace up (or slip on) shoes are good too. A lot of the crew costumes are tops and the like, so you should be okay there.
