I’ve been eyeing up a kukri dagger but the description includes a disclaimer that says that it’s heavier and tougher than most LARP safe weapons, can anyone advise if this would pass muster here in NZ?

The manufacturer of that dagger is Calimacil. They use a different construction technique to most larp weapon makers, the foam is cast into the shape rather than carved and I don’t think it’s covered in latex. The end result is a bit heavier.
This is a dagger though, and the short length means it won’t have a lot of momentum. I would have thought the extra weight won’t matter much in a dagger.
The nice thing about khukuri is the way they are weighted, the blade is heavy which makes them more comfortable to swing (I own a real one that I bought one time I was in Kathmandu). The short blade is a bonus in larp because it means that you can more easily pull your blows because there is less momentum in the swing.
Ok, so consensus from the weapons experts is that because it’s a shorter blade it should be okay. What would you say about a full length sword made in that fashion? More for the experienced and properly trained fighters?
I have a Calimacil blade (110cm). Squire sword. Older version. Much heavier than most and has a weird swing on it. The new ones are meant to be much better and we did have a Danish fellow extol their virtues here once.
I quite like it (the weight is comfy) but it requires a lot more pulling than most other blades we use. But like most larp weapons - only as safe as their user.
Jared is best placed to comment on the Calimacil swords as he owns one. But if they’ve lightened the new models as he says then it’s harder to judge with feeling them.
Personally I’d be cautious about spending that much money on a weapon that some games might rule as being too heavy or hard.
Being good at pulling your blows (also known as hitting softly) can make most things safe. But weapon-checkers at games generally don’t (and can’t, and shouldn’t) take that into account. It’s more like “if someone was a bit stupid with this, what’s the worst that could happen?” That’s why wooden shields are out, regardless of who brings them to the game.

Be careful, this shipping is super expensive if you’re going to order.
f you want to order, see if anyone wants to order things as well so ya can split shipping…
Yow. 34.5 Euro? That’s practically US rates!
While they don’t give a shipping cost, it appears to be cheaper to order it direct from the supplier:
The other curious thing about Calimacil is that many of the swords have a tip with three straight edges on it, rather than a pointed or rounded end.

It’s supposed to allow for stabbing, although chiefly against people in plate armour I think (mostly to protect the sword from damage from the armour).
On an unrelated note, the shield in that photo will be available in the new range I’ll be bringing in.
