I love that you can’t use your oven for food ever again. >.<
Also, the “kits” you buy to make the foam latex itself cost over $200 for a small one. This doesn’t include the alginate, plaster, bandages, clay and all the other stuff for making the casts either, that’s just the foam latex ingredients. It’s a shame it’s such a PITA, because the results are really nice.
Well, that looks a lot less challenging, and only about as fussy as making lemon meringue pie, which I can do. I wonder how much a foam gel kit costs. I’d love to experiment with making appliances sometime. Making the face casts and appliance casts is hugely time consuming, eh Moo?
So the positive cast is the normal face and the negative cast is the face+appliance. Smoosh the gel in between the two and freeze. Cool. Plus you still get to cook tea in your oven.

Another page I was reading said it was $15US per “pack” or $50US for 5 “packs”. A pack being enough to do God only knows what, but it was all mixed up in one go…
You can buy all the stuff you need in NZ from a place called Top Mark, which is in Ellerslie. They supply mostly to the film industry, but are more than happy to answer all questions from those just getting into the field of prosthetics as a hobby. I’d highly reccomend them.
I bought clay, cement, alginate, plasters, silicone, sculpting tools, and a few other things for around $300, but I’m pretty sure that you can get the none top end stuff, be more economical with what you have and spend a lot less than I managed to.
I’ve been out to Top Mark and they’re pretty expensive. I still think it’s cheeper to import stuff.
I’d have to disagree. From the quick look I’ve had around, the prices add up pretty similar, especially once postage is added.
There’s more of a range available from overseas, but Top Mark generally stock quality rather than quantity. For ease of purchase and the confidence that I’m buying a decent product, I really wouldn’t bother with the hassle of buying from overseas.
Do Topmark do the foam gel though? I suppose I should go look, sounds like it’s light like a latex one, which is way better than the silicon which kept pulling away because of the weight.

I admit it has been a while since I went there. But last time I spent lot to get not much…
