Ive been out of practice too long unfortunately, I would have loved to enter, but I want at least one training session before doinf any type of sparring.

Although man did I have the itch last Sunday when I saw people sparring with case dagger

Thats cool if you can help out by keeping the judges awake…i mean happy, then that will be grand

if you can make it on thursday i could give you a work out in single sword.

your choice

Aw and I’ll miss it this year :frowning: Good luck to everyone who enters. Hope it’s as good as it was last year

i may poke my head in on sunday , see how the old team is doing
i have my sundays free again , but not for long i suspect.

Can anybody provide a link to the rules of combat?

As far as I understand there are three judges for each bout and the bout runs for three minutes. The fighting only stops after the three minutes or if anyone calls a time out because of safety issues.

Each combatant is given a colour flag and at the end of the bout the judges raises the flag of the colour that they think won the match. The combatant with the majority wins and moves on to the next round.

The usual safety rules apply to the fight, no head, no throat, no groin, no deliberate targeting of the major joints or spine and hands and feet don’t count.

I think thats how it works. At the start of the match the two combatants decide how hard they are comfortable with hitting, so light, medium or heavy blows.

Cool. That gives me a rough idea.

Is there an online version of the rules?
Are they actually written down or are they word of mouth?

If there is I’m afraid I don’t know where. I’m sure people will be more than happy to explain the rules on Sunday. All you need to enter are, gloves, and a helmet, and to be recognised as being a safe Sword Fighter by a club captain.

However I don’t think that will be a problem for you as I’ve heard that youre big in the SCA. I am reletively nw to the Reanactment scene so don’t take my word as law, I’m sure Carl will probably comment later on.

Thanks Niki. It’s probably pretty much the same as it was many years ago then.

That’s not usual for me. Usually the head, throat, groin and spine are kills. We tend not to target the throat and groin, but it’s a kill if it gets hit hard enough.

Like THIS or THIS or THIS

Actually I’m only five and a half foot tall in the SCA as well.

 lol Thhose videos are quite cool, are those bokkun (sp?) that you’re using?

No they’re made from rattan (the stuff they make cane furniture from). Boken are solid wood.

The rattan will give you a nice* big welt and bruise if it hits you anywhere that doesn’t have armour. Rattan weighs around a pount per foot which gives it a similar weight to a steel sword, but they handle very different. They’re very slow through the air and they tend to bounce off stuff rather than bite into them. They’re also round so it’s hard to tell when you hit “flat”.

  • okay, perhaps not “nice” in the traditional sense of the word…

there is no online version due to the fact that i am only semi computer literate and have no place to put them.

the rules are written down and will be available on sunday

basically it is standard NAAMA combat but we fight for TWO (Not three nikki that is grading combat) minutes with no stops to score hits and a panel of three judges decide who won. Pretty much the same as the last one you went to but there are some new rules.

if you want a copy email me at carlsigvertsen@hotmail.com and i will send you a copy.

I’ve emailed you. I’ve also found NAAMA rules here and here

our tourney rules are not under the NAAMA rule set, but we use the NAAMA “Touch of Death” style combat but with some extra twists.

you should have the rules by now
