The Southern Cross Novel Challenge

Passing on for people who might be interested:
"The Southern Cross Novel Challenge (SoCNoC, pronounced “sock-nock”), hosted by KiwiWriters.org, encourages aspiring and veteran novelists alike to write a 50,000 word novel (or add 50,000 words to an existing novel or story collection) in the 30 days of June. At midnight on June 1st writers will dive into a no holds barred month of creation, manic typing, frantic plotting and late nights of fantasy.

Kiwi Writers co-founder Kerryn Angell says that sometimes the hardest thing is to just sit down and write. “Online challenges were a huge help to my own writing, but there just weren’t enough out there and some of them didn’t fit in so well with the southern hemisphere calendar. In the 4 years since Kiwi Writers began, I’m amazed at what our members have achieved.”

Staff member Anna Caro adds that it’s about more than just the 50,000 words. “There’s a great sense of community on the site, with members discussing everything from initial ideas to publication. Plus we run challenges all year round, for short stories, novellas, poetry and some planning exercises.”"

This interests me, but I have never even attempted to plot a novel or anything. How does one go about it?

Ok I’m gonna try to do this again…last time I did it I had finished a single page by the end (but its a page of my best writing to date) and one of the other people (I’m looking at you Anna) had got up to three times the target count…

This time I’m not going to go for the detail and standard I did last time.
This interests me, but I have never even attempted to plot a novel or anything. How does one go about it?
Start with an idea and start writing. Different writers have different methods - some work out in detail how the story goes before they start the actual writing starts, but many will start with a scene or a character that they find compelling and work out the why of it a bit later.

Okey dokey, this I can do. I bet I write myself into an inextricable tangle within days, but hey, it doesn’t really matter, does it?

50k in 30 days is only about an hour and a half a day. Not hard for anyone for whom June isn’t exam month.

This kind of writing challenge is really about word count. I think the theory is about breaking down the barriers people can feel about writing, and fussing over quality is one of them - when sometimes it just helps to get words down and do the edit later. If you get stuck on the bit you’re on, write a side story or whatnot, and you’ll probably find that it works itself in later, anyway.

As a veteran NaNoWriMo participant I can say it’s just about getting words on the page. Sometimes I’d resort to writing things like: “and this is the part where the two lovers have wild crazy sex on a rooftop, fill this in later, should take about 1k words” and would carry on with the writing.

I’m totally in!

Kara, check out this and see if it looks like it’d work for you: advancedfictionwriting.com/art/snowflake.php

Write your first draft quickly, and don’t get bogged down in details … fix it in post!

Also, for a fantastic series of discussion and advice for writers: writingexcuses.com/ is an excellent weekly podcast (been running 6 years) of writing advice.

Hee hee hee! I’ll have a go toooo!

I would love to do this, but will be writing for The Gordian Knot instead… still intense writing though, need all the same things

I might just give this a go.

And without the sex)
Isn’t that what George Lucas does, and doesn’t everyone hate him these days? :stuck_out_tongue:

No, that’s not meta enough for him any more. Now he just adds the entire movie in post.

Oh, be nice. George Lucas’ principle problem is that he can’t write romance scenes. But let’s not get into a squabble regarding bad movies here. Unless, of course, that’s the topic of your novel …
