The return of the 1930's game

This game is being run by Danielle Lander (not registered here yet), the LARP guru (and officer) from the Auckland University gaming group “AMERICA” (It stands for something).

Danielle emailed me this:

[quote]“larp guru?” who calls me that???

just a note, the 1930’s live game will be at Pog Mahones on ponsonby road,
not sure who told you Galbraiths but that source should be slapped…

Okay so I was going to post this when the venue was confirmed but now the
cats out of the bag I may as well do it now…

made more of an effort than jeans WILL be turned away, it happened last time

Characters: if you’ve expressed interest with me I will be writing you a
character/have already done so.
FORTY CHARACTERS MAXIMUM. first in first served, and all characters will be
given out BEFORE the night. this is not a turn up and play game. America
members get preference.

and live entertainment in the form of a dixie band. the rest is being
subsidised by a clubs grant.

with email addresses if possible so I can email you a brief character
description. if you have something in particular you want to play I will try
and accomodate you.

All right that should cover it,

see you guys in three weeks! I probably won’t be leaving my computer much
before then.

See those xx’s? I think she likes me.

Let me know in this thread if you want to be first to know if spaces are available (my guess is we’ll hear about a week out). I’ve heard people raving about the predecessor to this, and few-hour-long LARPs are great.

First posters will get preference!

I am not able to come along, whch is a pity, as I woudl love to.

So, if you get Xs on an email, this means they like you? I get spam with Xs in the title, I suppose they must like me.

R

actually, the xx’x meant I was replying to the AMERICA mailing list, and didn’t think it would get posted here… I will be more careful in future. :stuck_out_tongue:

will let you know as soon as I can confirm available numbers. I promise.

Danielle “I’m not a Guru” Lander

Thanks Guru Danielle.
xx

PS: I hope you don’t mind me posting this here; I just know there is a regiment of larpers/potential larpers out there that this would make a great introduction for. Hopefully this is the beginning of a long and beautiful friendship between LARPS and AMERICA.

Do I hear a possibility of an Associate agreement between AMERICA and the NZ LARP Society?

Maybe we could get some arrangement, whereby LARPS members get preference for game places (after America members, but before others) in exchange for… err, not sure. Advertising? Equipment loaning? A closer, warmer, more snuggly cross-association working relationship?

Better let Craig negotiate it, he’s clearly much closer to their leader than any of us…

oh dear lord…

well moving along, I’m pleased to announce that we have five places for keen LARPers. let me know if you’re interested/what gender you are/if there’s a character type preference and i will get back to you.

also it’s ten dollars, which gets you a share of the bar tab when you arrive. Pog Mahones also serves great food so dont have dinner beforehand! the setting is a big party anyways so eating will in fact be in character. (and so is drinking, although maybe this time the GM shouldn’t…)

laters,
Danielle

Brilliant! Malu and I will be there - so make that three places left.

Pog Mahone

Hehehehehehe

ooh. Does sound goodo. I want to come though know not what to wear. Also, I am the community officer, I was wondering if we could collaborate on some extreme Uni advertising ventures.
It could be fun and funny.
PM me or give me a text of the details (how much and if i actually have place), Guru Danielle.

You guys make me want to coooooome…! It sounds so fun!

But I have this little thing going this weekend called NAAMA… :stuck_out_tongue:

There are a couple of spots that have become available. If anyone’s keen for the 1930’s game on Saturday, raise your hand!

Raises tentative hand. I only really have a nineteen twenties outfit. How much does it cost as well?

Lucy

Don’t get too hung up on exact costume, as long as you dress up. it’s set at a casino opening so it’s formal. i’m not going to kick anyone out for being in the wrong fabric or having their skirt the wrong length!

it’s ten dollars which gets you a ten dollar share of the bar tab. you can also buy food there (and more drinks, of course).

I’m in oh me! oh me! I was meant to confirm and stuff ages ago. I might have already been mentioned I’m one of the people Cameron got to come along.

im out. im sick. :frowning:

Thanks again, Guru Danielle, that game was world-class.

Details, please! How about a review of the game?

Game was utterly fantastic. I see why people have been looking forward to it for three years.

Thanks for the awesome night (and character), Danielle!

I call for more systemless LARPs. It was so much fun to get out there and not worry about rules and such, to just get in character and do what my character would’ve done. I know it’s not possible for most LARPs, but let’s go and create some more that it’ll work with. It’s outstandingly good immersion.

And how do I get my hands on the photos that were taken?

Wait 'till see Anna; she looks… just… stunning. Sepia-tone with crimson lips, and laden with pearls. I’ve never seen anything like it.

The game was the opening of a casino, full of important people and “family”. It was all very glamorous and corrupt, you knew pretty much anyone that talked to you was probably lying. It all had this “keep it looking good” overtone, even though everyone knew things were dodgy as all hell.

The role playing was generally quite good, although a lot of people were skating between in and out of character pretty rapidly. It seemed they got into character again when strong role players and people percieved as important were around.

The game ended for my character with stealing $800,000.

That game ruled.

I too wish too see the MANY MANY photos of it. I’m planning on collecting them all like little mafioso pokemon and posting them up somewhere. Anna did look FANTASTIC. I will agree on that. I’m actualy gutted that I didn’t get a picture with her :frowning:

See the complex thing is that reveiws for that game are hard to do…as no-one realy knew totaly what was going on because there was so much happening in the few hours of game. But I’ll give a Quick review without giving away any plot info (as there may be another next year)

REVIEW:

Great venue, fantastic staff (for putting up with my BAD accent all night). Good fleshed out pre-gened characters that thrust you right into the depths of the plot and gave you plenty of reasons to mingle and interact. The players we’re just fantastic. The level of improvisation by characters and give and take was increadible, it allowed the plot to just grow and grow. The costumes were remarkable and allowed you to just seamlessly slip into the world. I cant think of a down side of the entire evening. I for one had been waiting a good few years for this game and was NOT disappointed. The atmosphere was VERY relaxed and we did often drift in and out of character (The experianced players and old characters often to make sure things wern’t going to fast for the first timers) and this was not realy a big deal. All in all I would say a perfect example of how giving players characters and just setting them loose to their own means works a treat.
