ok so iv be wondering this for a while but given the choice what kind of weekend larp would people want to take part in?
i mean no ill will towards the games coming up but i do feel in a way sometimes larps are kinda forced on us, like “this is the larp we are running and if you want to larp here it is” (but again im not saying that in a negative way) im simply saying what would be you fantasy larp if you could have it?
would it be full on fantasy where pretty much anything goes? magic, giant weapons you know all the fun stuff.
would it be fuul on tec guns, lightsabers , cybernetic implants.
would it be a mix of the two would you want a game that was always running like a spy game running all over wellington at any time of the day everyday of the week?
The biggest thing here is you get offered what people are willing to run. Running any game is a huge time and energy commitment. Let alone a campaign larp where you have also financial costs, a lot of planning, rules, world and plot to write. So to even get involved you have to be passionate about the project. And even when people have strong ideas for a campaign it still takes a lot to pull it all together.
I do think you will see a few more games coming up soon, I know of a number in the pipeline and it sounds like a good variety of ideas. And in Wellington apart from the one offs I would say you also had Kingdom which was high fantasy, World that Is which is post apoc/sci fi, and there have also been changeling and Mage games. All along with 33ar which has been very popular and successful.
I don’t disagree with what you are doing, I think it’s good to find out what people want, and that might inspire GMs, so it’s really good thing to put out there. Just be aware that GMs might be busy with other projects they are passionate about or not want to commit to certain projects. As players we can also always vote with our feet and money, we don’t have to play every game.
The other thing is, if you feel the kind of game you want is not being offered, then get a group of people you trust and can work with around you and offer that game up, the community will quickly let you know if they are keen. People do probably want variety but you will quickly find out if they want the same thing you do.
I’ve always found that the things you want to do, you need to do yourself, but it means not being able to play. Eg: I love Shadowrun, but none of the games that have started, have continued, which frustrates me, I’d run a SR game, but then I’d not be a player, which sucks, but at least I’d be involved.
If there’s something in particular you want, then as Scott suggested, it’s worth putting something out there to garner support and perhaps find some people to turn it into reality.
Unlike Auckland, I Personally don’t think there’s enough LARP Population here to run more than 1 weekend long campaign at the same time. I liked Kingdom & WTI - as they were campaigns, but were only an evening/day type game. Rather than weekend, long.
