The Black Hart of Camelot

The game is booked and registrations have settled down a bit, so this game is about ready for confirmation of character placements. But I’m going to be offline for a week or so, so it’s going to have to wait until around July 6th. Just wanted to give some warning.

Did you have a flavour of Camelot in mind? i.e. Late Roman? Renaissance?

There’s a broad sense of the era given in the game’s costume section on the Chimera website:

Broadly I’d say “late medieval”, but some earlier medieval and Renaissance feel won’t be out of place if it emphasises the characters well. For example, I can imagine Mordred in your black gothic plate armour. I’m definitely not thinking of the “historical” Roman Arthur, rather this is the era of the literary Arthur.

It might be easiest to show the feel I have in mind in pictures:

For simpler, perhaps somewhat earlier medieval Arthurian costume ideas, The Boy’s King Arthur has a number of good illustrations.

mmmmm…pretty.

Now that I’m starting to think seriously about costume, I’ve come to the problem of shoes. You never see the women’s shoes in those pictures, and I’m not that familiar with fantastical medieval romantic shoewear…
Anyone have any suggestions?
Alternatively, anyone have any suitable shoes for size 8-9 women’s feet?

I think that many flat, open-topped shoes would look appropriate for ladies.

Some ballet-like shoes would work, especially because they come in various colours so can be suited to a dress:

(Although the Warehouse might be a better place to look for cheap shoes that you’re happy to wear in a forest glade, rather than Marc Jacobs)

I imagine that when it comes to footwear, people won’t want to make or buy new shoes or boots so will just use whatever’s most appropriate from their wardrobe. Which is fine.

So all games for Chimera 2009 are supposed to be finished by today, but I’m still putting the final touches on Camelot and editing it.

Apologies for that. I hope to have the characters ready to send out as soon as possible, to give players a chance to get familiar with them.

Shit. What’s the deliverable on this?

(Actually, my game is basically ready, but still needs some final tweaking).

Site says “Your game must be completed by August 1st so we can be sure to have a ready game on the day of the convention,” so I guess it’s a deadline for last-minute people like me.

I assume the deliverable is getting character sheets out to players, but it might depend on the game.

Don’t stress about it, Ryan, I’ve just been told for Great Exhibition we get the actual character sheets only on the day, and I have no idea at all what I’m doing on Friday and Sunday - got confirmation that I’m in, and that is it. I think you are actually a very well organised GM  But yup, looking forward to getting the character sheet from you soon, yay!

Not surprised - I don’t envy those generous folks, with 60+ characters to write. 20+ is by far enough work, and the complexity of it grows with every character.

For those interested in having somewhat genuine heraldry for their characters:

Can be used for Pelles

Lancelet

Cameliard - i.e. Leodegrance

Percival

Morgause

Merlin

The Lady of the Lake

Morgan le Fay

Most of those above are sourced from the Pendragon roleplaying game, which in turned sourced them from d’Armagnac Armorial from around C14. The smaller ones comes from here, they seem to have the same source but have been drawn differently.

Just thought I’d post them for interest, there’s no need to use them if something else is more convenient. Heraldry could be used on tabards, banners, etc.

I’ve just put the player’s guide online:

The Black Hart of Camelot briefing

It has three pages of setting and rules.

It’s optimised for reading on screen. You may need to set your printer to landscape, if you want to print it.

Still proof-reading the characters, hope to send them out this week.

Verily, I do like the rules.

I assume that we’re looking at normal “larpsafe” weapons / no wooden shields etc …?

I take it that armour is just costume, and won’t effect hit points …?

Yes, we’re looking at typical Auckland larp combat. I should describe that here for out-of-towners.

I would prefer latex weapons or similarly streamlined and unobtrusive weapons. No weapons or shields with metal or wood on the surface. When fighting, no rapid tappity-tapping, you should draw the weapon back each time. Blows should be pulled (i.e. their momentum should be checked as they approach the target) and land with a firm tap, not with a hard impact.

Wearing armour is encouraged for the knights, but it doesn’t affect hit points. Hit points are based on the knight’s reputations, most are quite similar with a few who excel.

If people have costumes, weapons, shields, or armour that they can loan to others, or are in need of a loan, feel free to discuss it here. I have a white tabard and shield with a red cross that could be appropriate for Galahad. I’m also lending a longsword to be Excalibur. And I have have a chain hood that could be used. My other chain is probably too deteriorated to use (will teach me to buy cheap). I’m also happy to lend my foam greathelm if anything thinks it is appropriate for their character.

I would much appreciate the use of the shield  (Im playing Galahad) I have a source for some chainmail and a sword and Anna is making me a tunic and tabard so, althought it wont be white with a red cross, it should still look good

Okay, I’ll bring the shield and you’re welcome to borrow it. It’s got a red Jerusalem cross rather than a plain red one, but it’s all good.

All the knight characters are equipped with longsword and shield. Some other characters have just a sword or dagger, and some are unarmed.

I’ve just emailed out all the character sheets. If you don’t receive yours, please let me know.

I have one more note in terms of play style that I meant to mention in the player briefing. I recommend that players go hard at trying to achieve the goals on their character sheet, and don’t worry about stepping on toes if that’s what their character calls for. There are only three hours, there’s a lot to resolve, and while there is definitely scope for cooperative play many of the characters are also designed to provide interesting challenges to each other via conflicting goals. Free counseling will be provided afterwards to any traumatised players.

Oh dear goodness, thats right, I’m playing Arthur… put my name down for that counselling…

Nice character sheet! Won’t be hard to go hard looking at these goals.

Look out everyone!
