Teonn Crew Gear Sewing Bees

Hi guys,

I’ve just been chatting Muppet (The Great and Benevolent Game Master of Teonn) who was saying he’s needing a bit of new soft kit created for Teonn - particularly more peasant and noble kit. nZLARPS has no shortage of fabric at present, what it needs is half a dozen hands (and scissors and sewing machines) to do put it together.

I was thinking of doing two afternoons, maybe one late September and one mid-October, before Teonn panic really kicks in for everyone.

Thoughts? Volunteers? Rabid enthusiasm?

what type of peasant/noble gear?

Also - it can be really hard to get to a certain place on a certain day with all your sewing stuff.

Just an idea, but what if people could say what they would like to make, then get the fabric of NZLARPS, make it and bring it back to NZLARPs - e.g. John says I will make a tabard, he get a metre of fabric from the gear to make it with, goes home and does it, then gets it back to gear.

Just thinking we might get more props and gear made this way…

I think that would probably work for more complex stuff, but people have enjoyed sewing tunics and robes as a group before. I was hoping to arrange to use the Tangleball space for this. And there’s no reason that we can’t do a sewing bee and have people work on stuff separately too.

If I’m not working I’ll be there

Keen

I’m in

happy to help, more likely to be able to after the beginning of october.

Let me know when and where. My sewing machine is kapput at the moment, but I’m sure I can make something useful…

I’m happy to help, but ummm … you’d have to teach me how to sew first.

We can do that Robbo

I’ll take you up on the offer. In the past I’ve usually traded cooking and stuff for sewn/crafted stuff. Be kinda nice to be able to make my own kit though.

We’ll probably organise some work on the broken spears/weapons/shields at the same time.

I’m a novice sewer (is that even the right word?) but I’m keen to help out if I can.

Peasant kit is mostly straight lines, so even a novice seamstress or seamster can give it a decent go  I was wondering about maybe arranging to use the Tangleball place sometime.

it’s probably not worth shipping fabric down here, or else I would totally help!

ETA: I’ll go through my fabric stash and see if there is anything I can make from that…

If i dont have to work or uni! Im there! I can sew a straight line yay!

Dunno if I can make this, but I do have a suggestion.

I think the soft kit we currently have is light on nicely-made medieval costume. I don’t mean we’re lacking colourful stuff that will pass for noble, we have that. What we’re lacking is a variety of costumes that are made carefully to suitable medieval patterns with suitable materials. There is quite a bit of stuff that is basically rectangles of material for a torso with different-coloured long rectangles sewn on for sleeves, in mismatched fabrics.

So, my suggestion would be to attempt quality over quantity. The costumes stay with us for years in the NZLARPS gear, and get re-used hundreds (maybe thousands) of times. So it’s worth us putting the time into making nice items (whether peasant, noble, merchant, soldier, or otherwise), instead of just aiming for quantity.

Perhaps a call for people to consider donating costumes they’ve made to the NZLARPs gear library, if they no longer have a need for them?

I’m really starting to run out of room in my costume closet and have been considering a bit of a cull. Though even typing that gives me the shakes!! Pack-rat

I agree!

My NASA Overalls will be put into the Wellington Gear pool. Along with my Shemite Helmet I think. Just a couple of costumes pieces I doubt I would use personally again.

LOL. I feel the same… “but what if i suddenly NEEED it again!”

I have more costumes than real clothes, there’s bound to be some things I don’t want to wear again.
