You can’t buy this stuff in NZ so anyone who wants to make a corset or crinoline is forced to either ship in or make do with the plastic stuff. I’m thinking of importing like 50m of the stuff and then selling it on. I’d probably be selling it for around $8/9. Is there interest for this? Does it seem like a good price?
Am reasonably interested. How much would you need for a corset, say? And do you have a source for busks?
Would it come cut to a requested length and tipped?
This is TERRIBLE for crinoline - ok for a corest- just as an advisory.
$8 or $9 however is a good deal - I assume p/m right?
I’d be way more interested if I wasn’t broke right now; hopefully in the longer term I would be keen. I’ve seen this once or twice on Trademe for around $10-12/m so $8-9/m would be fine, but you do need lots of the plastic tips otherwise it will just dig holes in fabric.
Hello, I am new to this site, and this thread piqued my interest!
I would be interested in buying a few meters of Steel Boning, but is the width going to be the 6mm(1/4inch)? Because that is what I’m looking for! I’ve been trying to find some for awhile, but it’s all from overseas…
I think the price is quite reasonable, as the shipping fee would be quite expensive when you order the batch.
Please let me know when you have imported the bonings, as I would love to buy maybe 5 meters of it! :]
Thanks!
Hi All,
The boning has finally arrived! It is very nice stuff and I am very happy with it It is 10mm and I have tips as well. I’m going to sell it for $8.50 per meter and caps for like $0.25.
Let me know if you’re interested!
Yes, I am interested. Will have to get the pattern and find out exactly how much I need. But I will be making an order.
Great, if you interested in going halves on shipping of any of the truley victorian patterns, let me know! And just PM when you know how much you’ll need

What would you recommend for a crinoline?
steel strapping is the best I have found in NZ
They used to use it at lumber yards to stack timber… hard to get hold of now as alot of them use plastic
I’m not a bit fan of spiral steal boning I find it top bulky, but FYI for Wellington people Golding Handicrafts carry sprung steel boning, which is thinner and in my opinion much sturdier. Works better for cage/hoops…
Will have to try this - bands are what I have seen work best and hold their shape.

Sprung steel is very close to the bands and is what I used for crinolines professionally, and by costume historians. It will give you the sturdiest lightest and thinnest line. it has the benefit for being able to be doubled up for serious corsets and still be thinner than spiral steel.
Well thanks for voicing your opinion that but as people initially responded positively to the offer, there clearly is not the same availability everywhere in NZ. If you look at the actual item its actually incredibly thin at only 1mm in thickness. It is also coated in white plastic.

Have actually used the green plastic logging tape to bone a corset. Works okay. I haven’t yet used steel, so I can’t tell you how they compare, however.

AHHH terminology differences that IS Srpung steel! I highly reccomend this!
FYI Industry standard sipral steel looks like this:
Er… that /is/ spiral steel. Sprung steel is very different - hard to coil.
Wikipedia and three industry sites (corsetmaking.com has something they call ‘white steel boning’ which looks like the product nboyce helpfully shipped in at great expense, which they define as:
“High carbon, hardened, spring steel, flat wire designed for flexible support. White coating is very durable and prevents rusting. Highly resistant to washing detergents and other fluids. Safe to dry clean!”
Google aside, the name nboyce bought it under is the name she’s going to call it, yeah?
Thank you for going to this much trouble, nboyce. We do apreciate it.
This is my Google search
There are many like it
But this one is mine
I’ve also heard of hacksaw blades being used with mixed success
… how do you get the teeth off?
