Source of Fibreglass Rod

Hey guys,

I’m taking the plunge into this “weapon” making malarkey (when you see what I’m making you’ll see why the quotes), and have found a place that sells 10mm, 1.2m long solid fibreglass rods - CRT sells them. They are theoretically fencing posts, I assume for some very lightweight fencing. They’re more than happy to sell it one length at a time, and the website says they cost just under $5 each (I have no idea whether that’s cheap, dear, or otherwise.)

I’ll be picking one up after work today, report to come

Would anyone be interested in a step-by-step report like I did for my shield when I made that for Teonn?

Cheers all

Yes!

RD1 is also a good source for Rods (so i’m told)

Yeah Bryn mentioned them to me too, but we don’t have them down here and I need it quick-smart like (it’s for Hydra :open_mouth: )

That’s a good price, when I’ve bought from a kite shop in the past 10mm diameter was $10 a meter.

10mm is quite heavy. Personally I’d only use that for a long weapon like a staff, to reduce bending. For a 1m sword what I’ve used is 8mm diameter. But people’s preferences for this vary.

Ahhh, i’m 1/2 surprised that theres no RD1 down there. But then, not really!!

Looking forward to seeing it.

$5 per rod is cheaper than RD1 (which seems to charge between $7 and $8, at least around here).

I’ve used the standard 10mm “fencing post” rods for various weapons, including maces, axes, daggers, and a couple of swords. It works fine, and is a convenient size for working with camp-mat.

I get my rods from Pultron Composits in Gisborne for about $50 for 50 (green) and $80 for 50 (yellow). You have to buy in bulk (50 at a time) and I don’t know what the frieght costs would be. There are 2 sizes that I buy, green ones about 5mm thick by 1 metre long, and yellow ones about 10mm thick by 2 metres long. They have a web site I think, but if you can’t get hold of them, PM me and I will sort something out. I currently have about twenty 2metre long rods that I am using as props in KiL Quest III, minor problems, and I will bring some green rods down for any of you to look at. 8)
