Set Scenes

Generally, NPCs are used to help generate plot and as adversaries. Frequently games will have “set scenes” or “set encounters” which the GM has designed in advance to serve up a situation to the players.

But some games try to steer away from NPCs and just have players interact with each other. This is great for the impromptu aspect of the game, but it often means that the special effects that can be applied to the situation are often not as good as a set scene planned for weeks in advance.

Should players plan “set scenes”? This often means they’ll be planning a course of action before the game starts and it isn’t strictly impromptu. Does this matter?

As in players deciding on courses of action prior to a module or game?
As their character or as a player? It could have some benefit for ironing out party interactions rather than throwing them together on the day (which happens a lot in Quest) and can cause weird interactions that a group of people may have ironed out if they regularly met, even in a broad sense. Regular “at the Inn” games would certainly help this, social interaction with/without threat of dying, if a venue was available, would certainly have benefit.
I mean what do our characters do inbetween games? Throwing players together to simply interact and work on character or simply roleplaying would be fun, though not everyone could spare much time. I find my larping time restricted by real life so adding to it above what I normally do may prove difficult.
As for whats better, isn’t a point of taking the fone of the hook and going with that which works best for each given situation? NPC as needed.
Is this what you meant?

for a while, when we had the player-base to run it we had an online MIRC based tavern.

Have you at all checked out the Mordavia forums by chance, they were still there last time I looked. Although it took about a week of real time to pass a day of game time usually.
