Seeking Public's Views On A Concerning Matter: Membership

I just posted this on the committee forum, but that might be the entirely wrong place to post it. This forum, where you fine people can read it, is probably a better place.

Here’s my concern:

I’ve just been going through the Immersion address list in preparation for sending out the forthcoming issue in the next day or two. I’ve been highlighting the people who have had memberships expire and haven’t renewed.

As I understand it nzLARPS is presently on 38 current members, with 19 members who have expired in the past few months who have not renewed their memberships.

This concerns me, because I like being able to send shiny Immersions to people. And also, I think it’s the kind of thing presidents get concerned about.

Mostly, I’m wondering why people aren’t rejoining nzLARPS and if there is something we, nzLARPS, could do about it.

Is it an awareness issue? Are people finding it difficult to stay informed about the status of their membership?

Is it a value issue? Will people only rejoin when they can see a value in it, like before a larp game? Will people not rejoin because they don’t see being a member as valuable in any way? What kind of value are members and potential members looking for?

Is it a desire issue? People don’t desire to be a member of nzLARPS? If we made being a member of nzLARPS desirable, as seperate from ‘valuable’, would we have more people rejoining? How would we go about making being part of nzLARPS desirable?

Or am I worrying about nothing and all will get around to rejoining soon?

Contemplatively awaiting the public’s constructive answers…

Is there a way to know if our membership has expired?

The nzLARPs database, which you can log onto, and check your details.

It’s here:
nzlarps.org/database.php

Does anything happen when membership expires? Like a reminder email or PM?

AJ (the nzlarps secretary) emails people to see what’s up and let them know how to re-join.

The emails work, I got mine & paid on the date of expiry… so theres probably other reasons…

Sometimes people leave the country…

:unamused:

I think I got an email from AJ but I really don’t remember what we did about it.

Am I current?

No, you’ve expired a few weeks ago

Do we need another large 6 monthly larp to obsees about like Mordavia? And does it need to be fantasy Don’t know?

There have been a number of great larps over the last couple of years, like Ravenholme but these were never long terms games with which players could really obsess about, and where players can arrange day games in between weekend games etc.

Maybe Serentity may fit the bill? Its seems to be getting some online attention.
Maybe St Wolfsgang, through I think tigger has mentioned it was not meant to be long term.

Not an answer for all members, but maybe a way to create a certain core membership base for the society.

Just my thoughts…

In a word, yes.

But I also think that it’s a very natural thing for people not to renew memberships, and not a sign that anything is wrong.

Agreed.
Apart from just forgetting and losing the rejoin email below the mountain of other emails we get…
I think that there are many reasons people may have for joining. One of those reasons is because they get a discount at games. It also so happens that over the same last few months last year there where a number of games running where signing up and getting the discount was a cost neutral exercise. I wouldn’t be suprised at all if the majority of the people that haven’t renewed their memberships are infact those people.
I’m sure they’ll probably rejoin again when they want the discount.
