Seed MMORPG

Flicking through a computer magazine I found a write up about this new Massivly Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Basically, its a MMORPG with no combat. Its designed very similar to the player-decides RPGs that seem to be getting alot of love on here. The players decide if the planet will terraform, or if they will escape to space again etc.

Whats even better is its in beta, so has a 14 day trial out, so put down that World of Warcraft and come have a play!

note

Although the client download is as small as 2.5MB, once you have it installed then you need about 238mb worth of patches. Make sure you have a good cap on your broadband if your going to play.

Ok, so I;m 41mb through the download of the updates, and I had a read of the before-you-start script.

These guys are on to it.

Most of it talks about creating your name. I’ll pull some parts from it that were most interesting:

“Choose something that does not contain contemporary references, i.e. “JudasPriest”, “Bush”, “Machinehead”, “Quake”, “Rammstein”. The reason is that while it can always be argued that such a name could be in use on Da Vinci, it is very immersion breaking.”

“The sanity check: Ask yourself if a Da Vincian [the planet community is Da Vinci] would use this name. Something during the in-game naming session prompted your character to pick this name among a multitude of others. Why? What made it appeal to him or her? What does it mean for him or her? How would it appear to the other Da Vincians? Does it feel realistic?”

"Your character name is entered in free text during character creation. If you need inspiration, the Internet is a very good place to go looking for lists of names.

www.baby-namer.com (and other baby namer sites)
www.behindthename.com
www.kleimo.com/random/name.cfm"

"2. Some names will be immersion-breaking and thus unacceptable. E.g. “JediHaxx0r” or “skyWalker44_2”.

  1. Names will be eyeballed, since no automatic namechecker can ferret out unacceptable names, while still retaining player freedom. Name checkers can be volunteers from the community."

Ok sorry guys, sad dissapointment.

When I signed in I couldn’t find any real people. My Computer (P4 2.8 with 1GB, 6600GT, 2.5mb connection) could not run the game with out jumping all over the place (was must have been getting between 1-6fps) and when I did finally figure out how to move the camera kept wanting to be in front of me looking at my character. It was irritating to use and little windows kept jumping up all over the place. It would only run in windowed mode and the graphic options were none. I turned off the tutorial to try and teach myself (because the noob tutorial was crap) but it still kept coming. I had no idea what was happening at any time. It wouldn’t let me walk over an edge that was about 1 foot high.

Its sad, this is the first game I have ever put down because of graphics. Great idea, but unfortunatly didn’t use a good graphics engine (the qube engine) and the game play was completly un-intuative.

I’m off to go cancell my subscription (you can’t play without entering credit card details)

Thanks for the review, too bad it didn’t turn out. Anyone else played this?
