Some of you may have heard me talking about a sci-fi campaign in the works, for others this is news. If you’re curious or interested, read on.
Premise:
The Human-Symbiote Alliance has made great strides in society and technology in the past 50 years, although not all of these have been beneficial for the Alliance species. One such discovery is threatening the very existence of the two species. Details are sketchy, but those who have relatives or close friends on the western edge of Alliance space will tell you of horrific machines that killed their loved ones, before they get visited by an Alliance Enforcement Officer to keep them quite and quell the panic.
It’s not enough though, and people are catching on. There is a mass exodus from the western edge of human space, heading towards the east, around the wheel of the galaxy. Talk of what the exodus found in the east has made it to the Net, and even the Alliance Spooks can’t keep the Net quiet. They say there’s an alien alliance of worlds composed of several species the likes of which Humanity has never seen before. The Covenant of Worlds, they call themselves, and they’re not letting the refugees through. According to the refugees, the aliens are saying something about Humanity needing to prove it’s maturity to join the Covenant and gain their aid, although they neglect to mention what the Covenant thinks of the Symbiotes.
If you’re smart, you’ll leave your possessions behind and head to one of the new colony worlds being built on the fringe of Covenant space. From what I hear, they’ve outlawed all wide-beam communication devices. Apparently that’s how the machines find you. If I were to place my bets on which colony you’re likely to be safest on, I’d say P3-895. I hear that, unofficially, it’s a proving ground for Humanity to join the Covenant. Apparently even the Alliance government approves of it, although I suppose they’re starting to get desperate.
Setting:
The setting is something along the lines of Firefly/Serenity meets Mass Effect meets Revelation Space. It will be set on P3-895, one of the new Alliance colony worlds bordering the Covenant of Worlds space. A better, local name for the planet will be given once that’s been decided.
Draft Game Information:
Session Frequency: Either 2 or 3 times a year, evenly spaced apart. There will likely be the occasional day game at several conventions during the course of the campaign as well. There will be an attempt to avoid December, January or February for weekend sessions.
Session Duration: I’m thinking of having weekend games for the 2 or 3 main sessions during a year, but only 3 hours for the occasional day games (which will have an influence on the plot).
Venue: Camp Kaitoke is looking rather tempting at this stage. Busses will likely be hired to get people there who would not be driving.
Campaign Duration: Probably 2-3 real-world years (aka 6 or 9 weekend sessions).
Players & Crew: I’m hoping for a 2:1 player to crew ratio (2/3rds players, 1/3rd crew), and hopefully somewhere near 60 attendees to justify an exclusive hiring of the venue.
What is Needed:
I’m in need of some help, and by that I mean at least 2 other people to help me design, write, create and GM this campaign with me. I really haven’t come up with much so far, in the hopes that I can involve other people early on so that they have a say in what goes into the game and so they have an investment in its success. If you’re keen on turning this loose idea into a rich reality, please let me know! If you’re keen on playing in such a game as this, I’d like to hear from you too!
