Sad News

I have some sad news to pass on to everyone.

Steve Hodgson cheif instructor of Auckland Sword and Shield passed away early this morning.

For those that knew Steve this will be a shock and for those did not know him i am sure that you knew him by reputation at the least.

Steve was a good friend and was one of those men who seemed to be invincible and was larger than life, he was a role player and larper for many years in the days when you could count the number of larpers on one hand and he has trained most if not all of the steel weapon fighters in this country at one time or another.

His influence on re-enactment and by association Live Action role Playing cannot be measured and he will be sadly missed.

any messages of condolances can be sent to carlsigvertsen@hotmail.com and I will pass them on, or post them here.

Farewell and godspeed Steve, we will not see your like again.

Thanks
Carl

Wow, I am saddened by this news.

Steve was rightfully a giant in the study of swordfighting, and effortlessly (and repeatedly) kicked my arse when he played Skirmish one time at Western Springs.

I remember thinking “How does he manage to land his blows so easily and accurately ?”. The answer, I suspect, is that he followed a burning passion for the arts martial, and was a great and capable leader.

Rebeccah and I mourn his passing and our hearts go out to his whanau.

Mike

I didn’t know Steve, but I pass on my condolences.

thank you very much for your thoughts. however If myself or Adam, or AJ, or Tigger, or Ange, David, Porl, Marc, Nadia, Lucy, Donald, Hell any of the steel weapons trained larpers ever handed you your head in combat, you met Steve.

His spirit was in all of those who ever trained with him, and always will be in us.

He was the closest thing to Druss the Legend there ever was.

its really just not fair

I’ve only met Steve a few times, but he seemed like a top bloke. Very sorry to hear this.

For those that wish to know Steve’s funeral will be held on Friday the 10th of August at the Purewa Crematorium Chapel on St Johns road, Meadowbank in Auckland from 12pm until 1 pm, with a wake to follow at 1:30 pm at the Point Chevalier RSA.

Dress is whatever you think appropriate (Which means garb is allowed) but please no weapons in the chapel.

The family asks no flowers please but donations to a trust fund for Keith and Jessica will be very welcome.

At the wake there will be opportunity for those who want to say something in Steve’s memory, but during the service the family and close friends will be giving eulogies. This is to help manage the time as the venue is heavily booked.

Steve was loved by so many people that we fully expect the chapel to be packed so please people respect the family’s space and allow them the room they need to grieve.

Thank you so very much to all of you that are thinking of Maree and the kids and I will see those of you who can make the trip on Friday as we say Farewell to a truly magnificent man and a true and treasured friend to us all.

Thanks,

Carl
