Re-Latexing a Sword

I’ve decided to re-build and re-latex a sword I made about 5 years ago. Just briefly I used some rectangular Carbon fibre core 3mm thick by 12mm wide, allowing me to make a thin weapon, that still had 6mm of padding on the non striking surfaces and 15mm on the striking surface.

I used the standard sandwich construction 3 layers of foam but rather than use inner tube rubber or leather over the point to stop it piercing the foam I found some ‘special reinforced tape’ if I remember right it was reinforced with carbon fibre, and after 5 years seems to be holding up just fine.

I’ve just added a new hilt and pommel, and am planning to latex it to look like the attached picture of some real swords.

I’ll post some updates but first step will be a thin coating of glue to give the latex something to stick to. I’ll use some spray Ados that I picked up for a different job.

Wicked. Those cross guards look almost identical to my first attempts at forging steel quillions.
