I sometimes go along with my sister to a “old english dancing” class, held monthly on Friday evenings. The dance teacher is now offering a set course, held in Newmarket :
Another series of 6 classes in Quadrille and other Victorian Dances will start soon in the Billiard House at Highwic, (entrance from Mortimer Pass). This year it will be held on Tuesday evenings at the earlier time of 6.30pm - 8.30pm, starting 17 May and finishing with a costumed ball on 21 June. The course will cost $60 per person, to be paid on the first night. The classes will be limited to 20 people as this is all the Billiard House will accommodate. Paine’s 1st Set of Quadrilles will be included again because it was always on the Programme of Balls and Dances, as well as some new Quadrilles and Victorian dances. email Beth Harris bethharris51@hotmail.com
The classes are everyday wear (though I think a skirt is appropriate for women) and the final ball will be in costume. Last year I didn’t go, but I hear that they held it at Highwic - maybe in the actual ballroom, rather than the annexe where the classes are held. And Howick historical society lent people dresses/outfits, and had some people come along to it. FYI Highwic is one of the Historic houses in Auckland operating as a museum, like Alberton. (Shame they built it so close to the motorway though
)
No partner necessary, you mix and mingle with the more experienced dancers anyway.
Anyone else interested/keen in coming along ?
