I’ve had an idea for a fun night out. The movie Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp as a 1930s bank robber, is being released in a few weeks, and looks awesome. I was thinking it might be fun to go see a late afternoon screening one Saturday, then go have dinner at Prohibition in Ponsonby, which is this awesome restaurant done up like a 1920s speakeasy. This would be a fun group outing and we could even dress up. Is anyone interested? I was thinking of August 8th.
From what I’ve heard, the movie isn’t exactly the greatest piece of cinematic excellence. But the other idea sounds like much fun…
Four words, my man: Johnny Depp in pinstripe.
I’ve been wanting to go to Prohibition for awhile. Finances permitting, I’m totally keen.
Glares at Anna
You would have such a brilliant idea while I’m out of the friggin country, wouldn’t ya?
Tell me about it.
I am totally in, as long as I can get my finances in order.
Seconded. But I should be able to do it. August 8 sounds good.
How much do meals cost there?
Reasonably expensive actually. Had a poke around when they first opened, and mains were around the $40 mark. Prices may have changed by now though.
Yeah, not cheap. Probably good tho.
They also have some sort of set menu thing called “table de hote” on Saturdays which is $70pp. Includes bread, starter, main, side dish and dessert. If you’re hungry, probably the way to go, looking at all the prices individually.
After feedback from people, I’m changing the date of this to August 29th, so it’s going to be my “oh thank god I survived Chimera” celebration
Anybody and everybody is welcome to come along.
Oh yay, might be able to make that. 8th was a no go.
Me and Tigger are going to see Public Enemies late afternoon on Saturday at Queen St cinema, then dinner at Prohibition restaurant in Ponsonby.
Anyone is welcome to join us, but send me a txt or an email to let me know, so I can book Prohibition. Movie time will be posted on Wednesday when the cinema posts them.
Thirties gear is encouraged.
Ahh, poop - I’m away
Can’t wait.
Definitely love to go to Prohibition, but don’t think I’ll make the movie. Mike is on Waiheke at another Blues Festival, who knew there were so many? O.o I couldn’t organise childfree-ness until after 5pm.
Movie is at 5:20pm on Broadway, converging for dinner at Prohibition at 7:45pm.
It’s visually very difficult to watch. It has to be on purpose - the framing is always a bit closer than you’d expect for the shot, they have people walking between the camera and the subject, the focal point is often partially obscured, they’ve done something with the lighting to make all the images feel flattened out. I expect the DoP was trying to make a statement or make it more immediate or something, but I found I had to keep squinting or looking away from the screen because I was getting a headache.
Oh, yeah, good movie.
see you for dinner. won’t make it to Newmarket for 5:20.
