As a test case for mixing AS and LARP.
I don’t know much about LARPs so would need all the help I can get to make it interesting for the LARPers involved. :bulb:

The sceaniro so far.

North Korea has bowed to international pressure and has granted a team of
Scientists/Weapons inspectors/Media access to one of it’s underground Nuclear facilities.
There are interested parties that want to use this opportunity to trigger an offensive response from the international community.

We have WMDs! Come and check them out.

WMC (Weapons & Munitions Cartel)
Want to make it all go bad so their can sell more arms during the conflict.
To achieve this they have enlisted the help of a local rebel group.
Their orders are to capture the tour group and hold for a long as possible.
Making a mockery of the west.
A laptop at each base with active wifi network connection to facilitate negotiations.

BW (Blake Walters)
Is an independent security firm with offensive capabilities.
They have been hired to make sure this PR exercise has a happy ending.

How might it run?
The team is collected from Parakai Pools parking lot in a marked van.
ID cards/radiation detectors are handed out.
You are driven to the facility (10 mins)
A security detail will escort you on a scenic tour of the above ground area before taking you underground.
Somewhere on this tour your security detail will be eliminated.
You will be taken prisoners and held for ransom/execution.

A rescue team will be trying to free you but do not count on it.

Options?
Make a break for it and get off the Peninsula.
Find the underground entrance and code from a guard.
Wait for rescue.

The idea of a larp where players are both guards and hostages has always intrigued me. The biggest “problem” I see is that most players won’t want to mistreat each other enough to make it feel realistic. We’re all too nice to play the kind of arse hole who would actually torture a prisoner.

Most games I’ve been to, people don’t even tie up prisoners. They just loop a piece of string around their hands and say “you’re tied up”.

It’s the kind of game I’ve love to play if people were going to try and lift the intensity a bit. But then, I love reading books by Lee Child :slight_smile:

You have the option of 6mm, 12mm or 17mm.

Although role playing is not a big part of our game I am sure we could turn it up if required.

Unfortunately, I think I’m close to alone in this view… I think most larpers like it soft and friendly. :wink:

Actually, I was just thinking that it’s frustrating in larps that there’s no authorised way to just abduct someone and drag them off, or to be the victim of such and really fight to get free (kicking, struggling etc) , or have a barroom brawl … obviously that’s because it’s difficult to keep that kind of thing from really damaging people. It’d be great for the drama but not so good for the OSH or ACC claims!

So I don’t have many clues on how to make it work, but it’s not something that would put me off a larp.

edit… sitting around for 4 hours with nothing to do WOULD put me off a larp, so there’d need to be sneaky or negotiation options, or the possibility of smacking a guard round the head with the handcuffs and running away, lol.

I’m game…but I’m not sure how I’d get to parakai and back though, and I’d have to be back in town by 4. So if anyone is going with this timeframe in mind I’d be glad to try a “Heavy Interaction LARP”

Also any advice on what to wear? We’d be playing the Scientists/Weapons inspectors/Media right?

Correct you would be playing one of those roles.
Which one I am not sure.
Smart casual would cover it :slight_smile:
But be prepared to get it dirty. Bloodied even :open_mouth:

A mate of mine in Auckland has just been playing with the HK USP replica (pistol) by airsoft. I haven’t been paying too much attention, but from what I gather the gun fires at around 200ft/sec. Some of the bigger ones at Backyard claim up to 280ft/sec.

Your average paintball gun also fires at this rate (200-250ft/sec), the difference being a paintball is about 15mm in diameter on impact, whereas a bb is only 3-4mm in diameter.

Maybe I’m just too much of a wuss in my old age, but paintballs can inflict a fair amount of pain as they are (ask Jared), and the thought of something with the same force of impact on a much tighter point is a little intimidating.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the base idea for this is bloody awesome - and I agree, it would be cool to have a ruleset where you could have people dragged away properly etc. The trick is that we also want larpers to trust each other - you won’t trust someone if you think they’re going to hurt you, or if they already have.

Just keep it safe, k?.

You have a valid concern Dave.
But the energies are vastly different.

PB is 13joules,
AS 0.5-2.5j

That is the simplified version.

Most people call Slug/Air guns BB guns as well.
It does not help when they also make replica Air pistols.

These are not Slug/Airguns, the are AirSoft guns :slight_smile:
Firing 0.2-0.33 grams 6mm plastic pellets.

Airguns 4.5-12mm, 450-1200fps. Yes you can get 50 cal Air Rifles and bigger :open_mouth:
Paintball uses 17mm 3.3g @ 300fps
RAM 12mm 0.8g @ 350fps
AS 6mm 0.2g @ 380fps (any more and Marshall/Club has to approve the player using it)

not so much… what larpers really wanna know is how much is it gonna hurt if you manage to get stuck in the crossfire… or shot for trying to escape!

If the larpers are in “labtech” gear (ie. no goggles and armour), would it be possible to really get hurt? eyes are always a big concern, they don’t grow back.

(sorry if all this has already been answered and i missed it.)

Yeah. They can sting on bare flesh…but BB’s are fine. As long as you have adaquite eye protection (which raises a good point the “meat flags” will be issued with these right?) you’ll be fine.

I’ve been shot by some before and I can tell you while they may sting, and may break the flesh a little (similar to the way a paint ball gun can) at close ranges, they are probably less dangerous than paintballs on the whole. But in both cases the right equipment (in paintball a mask in airsoft goggles) and you’ll be fine.

Yes that does sound a lot better, is hard to tell when they only say “280ft/sec” or whatever.

I’d be very interested to see one in action and to hear how the game goes :slight_smile:

Pain, find the biggest, nastiest rubber band you can.
Now shoot yourself from 5cm on bare skin.
If it drew blood, it’s more painful than AS. :blush:

While we will try not to shoot you, there is no guarantee the bad guys won;t use you as human shields.

Wear loose clothing.
Long sleeve and legs, not shorts and t-shirt.

Guests from NZLARPS will be issued with suitable eyewear :slight_smile:

awesome… some of the “goggles” just look like sunglasses! would be sort of strange to be a labtech hostage in full on goggles.

I can’t go though :imp: … let me know how it goes, I’m really curious!
