Pre-made character poll

For games with pre-made characters assigned to players to do you prefer:

  • Getting your character some months in advance so you can organise costuming and try and get a better hold on who your character is.
  • Getting your character on the night so you are challenged on the roleplaying experience
  • Other (please state in post)

Hey

As I am planning the America’s Cup larp i’m just curious what people think on that matter. There is some debate within the club that America’s Cup larp should be one where you get your character on the night, no matter what.

What is your opinion on what difference getting a character earlier vs getting a character on the night?

Muppet

I quite like it as an on-the-night-challenge, but you know, the costume…
If I come and get a military sergeant role, and I’m wearing an evening dress with high heels…
But I’m sure you’ll be nice to me and give me a role that will fit my costume 8)

Months seems excessive. Two weeks?

i think it comes down to how much time people take to costume. Some folks will take a few months coming up with ideas and finding bits/making bits.

Most of the time I would say months in advance… I know that I am never that rganised when it comes to doing 30 odd characters though, they get done over months. Americas cup though? Numbers often vary and you get people pulling out at last minute so it ca be really annoying when some of the plots do not turn up. besides the Challenge on the night is always fun

May be different as a “career” crew member, but I prefer the off-the-cuff approach. Go out there with a bare skeletons idea of the characters demeanour and let interactions with others connect the dots. Over-preparation tends to end with an un-natural result acting wise personally.

The idea behind the America’s Cup LARP is to test peoples roleplaying skills in a live setting, as the rest of the event tests tabletop roleplaying.
While I can see the practicality of giving people character sheets earlier, that would ruin the on-the-night aspect of it.

Costuming advice is sufficient.

I’m partial for both

If I have months to prepare, I enjoy the luxury of having some extra time to put into costuming, thinking about character motivations etcetera.

But it’s surprising how much you can do with a pile of rags and some body paint in 10 minutes. Likewise, you can take a short NPC briefing and extrapolate that to create a vibrant character very quickly.
