My mum has a big birthday coming up, 65, and she loves lighthouses but she has major heart problems. Has anyone done the walk to the lighthouse and how hard would you say it is? Locals, is there an organised tour through anyone, Googles not helping me.

The path out there is flat, but unpaved. Could your mother manage several hours of walking provided it was flat? She’d want plenty of sunblock and water as it can get quite toasty, but it’s a lovely walk.

In terms of tours, I’m not sure who is allowed access on the road to the lighthouse but these guys do tours around some of the other coastal attractions and offer custom-tours, so you might get in touch and see if they could whisk your mom to the lighthouse in comfort: wellingtonrover.co.nz/customised.htm
