Party At The Paragon Institute: June 15, 2013

VUW Games Club LARP The Paragon Institute - June 15th

Writers: Steph Cybart and Thom Joychild
Players: 40
Location: TBA

Based on John and Hank Green’s concept of the Evil Baby Orphanage, originating in their excellent Vlogbrothers You Tube series.

[i]Life’s pretty good at the Paragon Institute, a very exclusive boarding school for the orphans of extraordinary but very obscure humanitarians from all over the world. The facilities are modern, the food’s excellent and the Institute’s on an island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island in the Phillipines, so the weather’s pretty amazing too. You’ve grown up together and become family (though some of you are dating, making it a slightly incestuous family), surviving algebra and angst alike as you were comprehensively educated on the bankroll of the United Nations. Now it’s time for the the Institute’s Midyear Non-Denominational Inclusive Social Event (or MNDISE for short, as the staff insist on calling it). Some of you are graduating at the end of this year and will be leaving the school for the wide open outside world, and this is a celebration of your impending independence. All the preparations are going right, for once; the organising committee hasn’t even self-destructed through infighting this time.

Only… There was that night two weeks ago when most of the staff were called to an urgent meeting about a break-in at the main office and came out looking very worried. Last week, each of you found a folder on your laptops containing a message from the student who’d hacked the school’s records, and your personal file- the REAL one. The one that tells you who you REALLY are. Or were. Or would be, if a team of time-travelling do-gooders hadn’t kidnapped you from your homes as babies, altering history and making the world a better place through preventing you from becoming the warlords and dictators and corrupt CEOs that you otherwise would have been. As it turns out, the Paragon Institute is named aspirationally rather than descriptively.

Will you survive the revelations? The MNDISE? The school psychologist’s whalesong-based career counselling? Answer these and other questions in the VUW Games Club Mid-year LARP!

Just to fill everybody in on the sign-up protocol for this year’s Games Club midyear game:

We’re still looking at venues and pricing costs, but it can be confirmed that both Games Club and NZLarps members get $5 off the registration fee. Games Club members will receive priority booking, and after a few weeks of registrations for our members, registration will open to the community at large.
The current plan is to open registrations for our members after Hydra, and possibly at the end of April, and then open full registrations in either late April or mid-May. More details as these come to light.
Looking forward to hearing from you all!

No, afraid not, but even with only one discount, people won’t be paying more than $10 for the evening. We’re aiming to honour our affiliation with NZLARPs by making it just as cheap for everyone, but to sweeten the pot for Games Club members by allowing them first dibs.

that’s all good was just asking so I know before everyone else asks me…

Looking forward to this!

I would love to play this game!

Registration for this game goes live in a little under 24 hours! We’re offering first character selections to the Games Club current members, but you’re still welcome to register, and we’ll do our best to fit as many people in as we can.

The game is at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 15th, at Vogelmorn Hall in Brooklyn. Save the date!

Registration is live!

Huzzah!

Registered!

Ditto!

Damn, will have to sit this one out. Will be in Auckland. Hope it goes well!

Just in case non-Games Club members were waiting for signups to open for everybody, they’re now officially live for everybody. There are still heaps of spaces, so click on the link above if you’re free on June 15 and want to be in a LARP that isn’t about the apocalypse (yet)!

Hey, before I register, any idea of what sort of costuming you’re looking at for this game? Just conscious that with Teonn and then World That Is, I might not have much of a chance ot whip anything too complex up.

Jon

Hey Jon,

My understanding of it is that the game will be very light on costume requirements - I think it might be somewhere between ‘Quick Bright Things’ (street clothes) and ‘Midea High’ (thrown-together formalwear). I can’t foresee anybody needing to put together a sequinned evening gown from scratch unless they really, really wanted to.

What’s the timeline for this? Still scheduled for June?

The game is still (at this point) scheduled for June 15th. It’s being written from scratch, so that goes some way towards explaining the delays, but hopefully some information will be out in the next couple of days (I’ve just been told this Sunday, at the latest).

Is there any website for this game, or Diatribe is the best place to check?

Um… and… is there any requirement for costuming?

ps. woohoo \o/

If you’re on facebook, several updates are being posted at our Games Club group (search for ‘The VUW Roleplaying and Games Club’), but there aren’t many announcements to actually be made - everything seems to be roughly in working order. The only thing of real note is that I’m currently writing introductions to LARPing for new players.

EDIT: Actually, I don’t think information about how to pay for the game has gone out. That’s a bit of an oversight. I’ll ask the GMs.

A space has opened up! Game’s tonight so I’d like to fill it ASAP. Male character, no costume effort required. Message me if you’re interested.
