New toy for St Wolfgang's

A 13th century-ish shield, mostly finished. I just need to touch up the paint and put a carrying strap on it.

The ply is 6mm thick with sanded edges and covered in cloth and the boss is made of camp mat (so I don’t hurt things)

Totally digging the angel wings.

Awesome

V. shiny.

and a nice little leather bound collection behind it…

Oh my… :smiling_imp:

Very beautiful. I want one

But…

At Mordavia: Reckonings, Carl brought a similarly-shaped shield. IIRC, it was 10mm rather than 6mm. I (as Obsidian) borrowed it off him during the Battle of Berium.

Turns out that the balance of a kite-shaped shield means that the bottom point has a tendency to swing with significant force as the shield-holder orients the shield. If a crew member (in this instance, AJ) is getting up off the ground as the shield-holder moves the shield, there is potential for the bottom point to hit them, possibly in the head (as happened by me to AJ).

Just thought I’d point this out so you can mitigate the risk, and avoid the bollocking that I got (IMO, undeserved).

Thanks, I shall endeavor not to hit AJ with it.

Mike I dont want to start an arguement but I want to point out that i warned about moving the sheild too much.

that sheild had a lot more weight than these one will so i believe the risk will be mitigated by that, but with the length of this kind of sheild the bottom is always going to be close to the ground, so a solution would be to do what we do in steel fighting, anyone who is on the ground lies face down and protects thier head and face.

It’s larping. The solution is not to hit people with your plywood shield…

you know that is just so crazy it might work

I understand. I’ve picked up those big long Auckland Sword and Shield shields and they don’t handle very well. They’re strapped too far off the center of mass, and designed to hang off the arm like a waiters towel.

Mine has a center boss and a vertical handle, just like the originals did, so this doesn’t happen. If you spin through 180 degrees, you just need to tighten up the little finger slightly and the shield stays perfectly vertical.

The whole point about having a shield is that you can re-orient it. I wasn’t swinging it around and I wasn’t shield-charging. Basically, the holder is unlikely to see anyone on the ground directly in front of them because of the shield wot they are holding.

Carl, fact is, you shouldn’t have brought a shield that was designed for metal-fighting to a larp. All the other shields are made of coreflute, and they have a minimal risk of damaging fellow participants.

Works in principle…right up until the battle starts and all Hell breaks loose… :smiling_imp:

Quite literally, in the case of St Wolfgang’s
