Monsters Inc

If you had a choice would you like to play a monstrous character in a LARP or would you rather stick with the stock player races like Elves, Humans and Dwarves?

  • Monstrous always!
  • Stock players races only.
  • Give me a mix.

This is linked to the Game Ideas post by myself: Quest Expansion - Flipside

EDIT: By monstrous races I mean, Orks, or Undead (for lack of a better example like “The Forsaken” from WOW) or something else suitably different from the standard fantasy line up of Elves, Dwarves and Humans.

I myself would prefer to have the choice. If I had the choice now I would play something a little monstrous.

For me, the idea of elves and dwarves has been so thoroughly explored that there is nothing left of interest. But that’s just me.

A number of the newbies really like playing the classics elves and co. (generally there first chance to do so)
Whereas the old hands like something different.

I’d love to hear some more comments on this subject please!

Well, In my opinion, it depends on the theme of your Larp, but in most types, a mix is definatly a good idea. Some of us spend enough time being human as it is, and alternate races is a nice break.

I assume it’s a hangover from table top RPGs that in larps we have traditionally had the distinction between PCs and NPCs. Eventually though, you get baddies that turn up to more than one larp and trouble the players over a period of time. They may ever get tougher…

The arbitrary PC/NPC distinction isn’t needed in larp. In table top it was because the GM didn’t want to have 30 GMs/NPCs to play a kobold village.

In larp, there is a person playing every creature. They don’t need a PC/NPC distinction and their role playing would usually improve if the player believed that they’d be playing them again next week. The bandit would actually have a bit of back story and might actually try to stay alive for more than 5 minutes…

This is a good thing if you want a “believable” world as opposed to a world where hoards of puny monsters throw themselves onto your sword. If you want a world where anyone can feel heroic because lots of monsters die in front of them then you don’t want the people playing the baddies to ever gain any attachment to their role.

You’d certainly not want to give them XP and let them go up levels…

Why Not?

Instead of Player Versus Player conflicts, you could have a PC and a NPC eventually become Nemeses… Think of the fun!

Each of you would be working hard to outdo the other… the backstabbing, the roleplaying… the Drama… Sounds almost like Mordavia really.

Well there are a few NPC’s who pop up from time to time in Quest…
The point is that many NPC’s become more than their original design intended. At this point theres nothing stopping a GM fleshing them out a bit more and making them a character in their own right.
Like Cinnamen the mage from the last game of Quest is likely to re-occur & improve during time.
This brings me to my point from the Flipside thread, many of those roles could be filled by fully formed characters right from the begining.

I think playing “baddies” is fine.

I just think that if they are given XP and go up levels they’ll try harder and this will make them tougher.
