Actions last month
a. There are possibilities for grants from the Lion Foundation – it depends on what we want to get – do we actually need/want a trailer, with ongoing registration and maintenance costs?
b. Rhiannon has checked out one place (in Helensville) that will do black-and-white cards in matt or gloss for $35/300 or $80/500 (20% extra for borders or full bleed). More places need to be priced for competitiveness.
c. Brian, Matt, and Rory are all working on Ravenholme. Have rules, want to do full weekend game sometime in next couple of months, trial game in next couple of weeks. At the moment they want to do it at Shakespeare Park, which is expensive ($1000 minimum hireage). Logistics help needed. They would like to borrow a phaser (fog machine, not high-tech beam gun) and some other props.
d. Og has not yet been updated due to Steve being overworked.
e. Likewise Mayday.
f. The circuitboard is probably located, Craig will drop round to get it.
g. The media release is now formalised and will be sent out.
h. As above.
i. Origami pirate hat research still to be done.
j. Lucy isn’t here, hopefully she can improvise some improvisational games.
k. AGM details are out, we have a location (K Road) and a date (13th Sept)
l. We have found a function room as above.
m. AJ has had three GMs contact him who are amenable to the idea of ‘fostering’ assistant game organisers – Ryan, Mike, and Tim/Brim (overseas, via email). As yet no wannabe GM’s have contacted him. However by the look of things Brian should have and will be contacted to ask whether he does want help. -
SAIL Larp – Anna
Anna and her co-organiser Craig had a few glitches so far, the main one being looking for a suitable island, and the second being how to get there and back. At the moment they are looking at Motutapu Island, and hiring a cottage that sleeps 12 people would cost $340 for the weekend. Expect your costumes to be somewhat damaged (soaked in sea, ripped a bit, etc.) The ferry is about $20 each return, but the times are somewhat inconvenient. Perhaps charter a boat? Costs $700 for both trips, but whatever times you like, and cheaper if enough people come. Other locations possible are perhaps Whatipu – a lodge, caves, and an 8km beach. Or maybe Motuihi. Budget will be $200-300 of props, reusable. The blurb is that a cruise ship is leaving Singapore for New York, but there is an accident two days out from Singapore. Surviving crew and passengers are washed up on a small island.
Motion to make SAIL an official Project – passed unanimously. -
AMERICA
Their AGM is next Tuesday, 7pm to about 10ish. They want to affiliate with NZLARPS. Benefits will be shared advertising for both, a wider player base. They may want to borrow some gear for their own larp games. Adam will go and preach to them about how cool we are and how much they want to join us. -
We Love Acting & Role-Playing Monthly - We LARP Monthly – also to be small LARPS so Wee LARP Monthly. (Craig’s idea of a joke.)
A monthly series of small throwaway events and situations to LARP out that do not need much preparation or gear. Emphasis will be on roleplaying. This can be a testing ground for ideas, and trial games. It is hoped to have a regular attendance. The preliminary timing is 6-9 every second Tuesday in the month. Craig will look into what day suits most people (perhaps Wednesday will be better, for example.) Needs a $100 float to organise and publicise, and a $100 budget for each game which is likely to create a $100 to $120 return per game. Need to make a Wee Account as a sub-account of the NZLARPS account (Which will be smaller than a normal account, presumably).
Motion to accept Wee LARP Monthly as a Project – 4 for, 1 against (Craig being silly), and 1 abstaining. Motion passed. -
Financial update by Steve – we’ve just put out a fair amount of money for things so we should try to keep a lock on spending for the next while. We need another Mordavia day game or so.
-
Post-LARP Review – last Mordavia day game – Mike.
Mike thinks it made about $100 profit. Everyone said it was a lot of fun, especially the part with the werewolf. The first game trial of the new LARP coins went well, though perhaps we need to be a bit harsher on making sure it’s given back directly after the game. The first game trial of the generator was also really good, most of the players said they didn’t even know it was there, though it is supposedly somewhat noisy. -
Upcoming LARPs – AJ.
a. Warhammer – Marc and Ryan haven’t done anything more since last month.
b. Mayday in Wellington – on hold – Craig says he needs to know numbers.
c. Mordavia – another Eranov day game in Mission Bay?
d. Pirates LARP – Lucy not here. We don’t even know if the London bar has been booked yet. We don’t have the documents yet. We are not particularly happy.
e. Mordavia weekend game – Nikki, who is now Logistics Officer. Hopefully there will be one before the new year. Unfortunately, any venue we manage to get will both be further away and more expensive than Motu Moana. Several places are being considered.
f. Nibelungen – Craig – needs a place to put the spaceship. This has to be a room that will be permanently a spaceship. However, it could be great for parties, watching movies etc. (This game appears to be cursed since the last two places nominated are going to be demolished.)
g. Nightmare Circle – weekend game planned for early September.
h. Stargate – Julianne – no update yet. Another trial game in next four weeks or so.
i. Skirmish – 26 August – Mike. Now an official affiliate of NZLARPS! -
Media release
Two changes to be made to updated media release, adding ‘game’ to “The players in this last commented…” and ‘th’ to the date at “September 19 in the…” Accepted in changed form as follows:
The New Zealand Live Action Role Playing Society Incorporated (NZLARPS) is spreading its wings. It was formally incorporated as a non-profit society earlier this year, and has opened its shiny new website (www.nzlarps.org) as a formal port of call. NZLARPS is an organisation devoted to promoting live action role playing (LARP) in New Zealand in all its myriad forms, providing funding, equipment and expertise to members running LARPs, and a range of shop and game discounts to its members.
LARP, which can be briefly described as shared improvisational acting where the cast are also the audience, is a multi-disciplined and highly creative form of entertainment. The people involved become fictional characters for the duration of the game. To enhance this experience, many games involve costuming, creating a believable physical setting and encouraging good acting skills, and can be played over large-as-life sets such as an entire forest or downtown Auckland city.
It has been a busy year for the society, with members producing a range of eccentric one-off games, ranging from cavemen of few words in Og, high politics in Executive Decision, a Stargate mission in SG21, and, most spectacularly, a bunch of revolutionaries trying to change the world by blowing up the Sky Tower in Mayday as seen in (nzlarps.org/mayday/tvnzindex.html ). The players in this last game commented on the sheer adrenalin involved in running around Queen St trying not to be noticed by the general public. The police, when notified of the game, said simply “No guns … and have fun.”
Due to the success of these games, sequels for most are being planned, particularly another round of Mayday scheduled for September in Wellington. NZLARPS also wishes to announce the brand new Pirates LARP on September 19th in the London Bar in Auckland, celebrating the international “Talk Like A Pirate Day”. Also in the pipeline are a high quality science fiction game Nibelungen, an excursion into Greek classicism in Mount Olympus, and of course more of the ever popular high fantasy campaign Mordavia.
-
AGM Discussion – It’s going to be in Alleluya in St Kevin’s Arcade on Karangahape Road, for $15/hour hire. The bar will be open but the kitchen won’t so we will have to get our own food in. A massive order of Hell Pizza will probably be the way to go.
AGM is officially on the 13th of September. The week before the Pirate Larp scheduled for the 19th September (International Talk Like A Pirate Day).
People will need their membership cards. Also, membership expires after the AGM so now will be the time to join up or rejoin for another year! -
Other Business – none noted.
