Middle Earth LARP

I’ve had this idea brewing in my head for a while now. Not exactly sure of about rules. But the setting would be based on the books but set away from the war of the ring. Probablt set in Dale or The Lonely Mountain. Sometime between the Hobbit and the LOTR.

Anyways thoughts? Yes? No?

Not for me, sorry. There’s so many LOTR knock offs already that I’m not much interested in participating in one myself.

Steph

I might be interested. (Big surprise lol.)

Sounds like fun, if you ask me.

(Big surprise there, too. )

Gena, the Russian guy who was at the improv evening and Mordavia: The Black Woods (bandit with long dark hair) is keen to be involved in a Middle-Earth game.

I’d play. I’ve got some quite Gondorian-looking pouldrons that I’ve been meaning to do something with…

Cool some interest. Now all I need is some co-orginisers. preferably with some awesome Middle Earth knowledge.

I was inspired by the game Third Age. If any of you get a chance to play it do so. It’s pretty good.

I’ve got the Lord of the Rings tabletop roleplaying game. I can lend it to you for inspiration if you’ll take care of it. No use for rules, but lots of ideas for characters and stuff.

Oh cool thanks.

I can see a Middle Earth adventure like The Hobbit kind of working.

Not sure if you can do LoTR justice though. The monsters are just too damn big and the armies are massive… the heroes are also too few compared to the monsters. I mean, who’d want to be crew as one of the 30 orcs that get cut down by a single ranger?

Thats why it’s set away from the books and films. PC won’t be fellowship level heroes. Nor will there be any massive wars.

Plus there will be more elves and dwarves. And no hobbits. unless we want to play in the shire in which case nearly everyne is a hobbit.

yeah. so more a ‘The Hobbit’ LARP than a LOTR LARP? that sounds like fun, I would be up for that.

I can see some interestings discussions if people find a gold ring

Maybe more like a Middle Earth LARP

Perhaps we could call it:

Acadamy of
Middle
Earth
Role-playing and
Individual
Character
Assimilation

Almost sounds familiar…hmm…can’t quite place it…nah, must be imagining it…

I think some sort of Middle-earth can be done reasonably well, but specifically LotR or The Hobbit can’t.

Rangers, Rohorrim, and Gondorians can be done nicely. Elves and orcs and Nazgul could be done well, although it’s harder. There is heaps of stuff away from the best known plots that is open.

I didn’t think much of Third Age, if that’s the turn-based fighting game where you follow the Fellowship around cleaning up after them.

If you look at it that way yes it is. It also has it’s own plot and characters and their interactions. It runs parrallel to the fellowship of the movies and you encounter them evey so often. It also has the spirit powers which as really cool.

Only three characters weild them. The elf controls the valar and water. The Dwarf controls fire and earth and the Rider of Rohan can mess about with HP, AP and MP. I like this idea that magic is limited by your race and that they involve you bending the elements.

Please note the idea of the game is to be set away from the Hobbit or the LOTR. It would use the setting but nothing else really. It would also try to steer clear of the movies in a big way. (admin could you please change the topic title to middle earth?)

I’d love to help with a Tolkienesque style of LARP, but it would have to be really, really good.
Magic in Tolkien’s world was not unique to races and cultures, it was used by the very powerful and wielded through magic items, such as rings.
I was thinking, a great way to represent the Palantiri would be through cellphones inside black orbs.
A really good setting for a Middle Earth LARP game would be in Mirkwood. Mirkwood, yesss… Elves from King Thranduril’s halls, Men from Dale and Laketown. Goblins from the Misty Mountains, Orcs and Nazgul from Dol Guldur. And, just for fun, people in spider-suits. Think of the fun you could have with stringing ropes between trees, and giving them ‘sticky’ properties.

Mounted races such as the Rohirrim or the Wain Riders would be really hard to pull off, so I’d suggest staying away from them. But some stories of the Mark don’t involve many horses, such as the story of Helm Hammerhand, in Helm’s Deep. That would be cool.
And the Dunedain Rangers of the North would be fantastic.
I’m picturing more open forests than the location of ‘Black Woods’, does anyone know Woodhills Forest? Something similar to that, but closer for everyone to get to.

I’d prefer a setting that isn’t elf heavy. I’d much rather have an IC explanation for no horses, like at Mordavia , than just leave the Rohan because it’s hard. I’d also prefer buildings. They make life so much easier.

In terms of magic the elves have healing powers and men have forsight. So it’s not all wizards and rings.

You could do something in Stoneybatter on Waiheki Island. It isn’t quite the “Mines of Moria” but it could be the Goblin caves Bilbo discovers. The Stoneybatter tunnels are the biggest I’m aware of in New Zealand and some parts are even safe

We did some games out there many many years ago and camped overnight in the tunnels.

Unfortunately, some of the wizards got a little carried away…

One decided to use sky rockets and roman candles for “magic” and some strong language was used…

Someone (it may have been Paul Schmidt) worked for the DSIR breeding bugs and threw plastic tubs of bugs on people for spells (he was a druid). I remember him defending his actions by saying “They’re sterile, they’ve been breed in a lab!”

Caves for goblins (and possibly a troll) would be really cool. The heroes could have a mission to reclaim an item stolen by the goblins. So they have to go in there.

As Ed said major magic is only weilded by the very old and powerful. So bugs and fireworks won’t be a problem. Though it sounded really cool.
