These are okay for working very light steel (like 0.5mm - 0.8mm mild steel) or copper, which is quite malliable. It’s not much chop on the weight of steel you’ll want for armour, which is typically 1.6mm+

Steel hammers work and heavy rawhide faced hammer (look for the THOR brand of hammer) like this:

The rawhide face is excellent for working the convex face, because the rawhide will deface when you hit and not mark up the steel. The copper face is harder than rawhide, but softer than steel and over time will deform to the job you use it for.

EDIT: you’ll frequently see these hammers for sale without the rawhide and copper plugs. These plugs can be purchased by themselves.
