MET: Mage

Its prehaps not as new as some of the ideas out there but I think it’d be fun. If we used the new rules it could work with any other MET game since they’re supposed to be all balanced now.

I’ve been keen to run one for a while but I’d like to know if anyone would turn up to one. So if you’re interested let me know.

I’d base it in Auckland and to some degree it’d be effected by current events. If it was to work in with the new Vampire system there would have to be some agreement about which areas are useable for the system. The main reason for this is . . .

depending on who you ask the sky tower is a chantry, a caern or a venue for elysium. Obviously in even the most congenial cities this won’t work so things would have to be worked out but I don’t believe this is a problem.

In any case if done correctly it could spawn all kinds of crossover ideas and with enough common foes doesn’t have to break down into combat between PCs. Even if it doesn’t look like it’ll work long term the groups could get together once in a while for a common cause.

The Sky Tower is a technocratic construct built by the Syndicate. There can be no argument over this, given when it was constructed.

Wolves don’t build such things, vampires don’t decide to build things so fast, mages can’t affford to build such things, and the building itself is far to banal to be a changeling construct

It is possible there may be a weak abandonded node/caern/hearthstone (they’re all the same thing, y’know) in the 23rd sub-basement, but only Iron Masters would ever be able to get to it now, and they would probably die trying to do so given the high rate of fire silver dispensing machines in the game room.

The Syndicate allow vampires to use the location as an Elysium, because one of the local Syndicate board members is a vampire.

OK, got that?

Of course, now I’m going to have to kill you.

Aha! I’ve figured out who you are.

Can you give us a “Mage for Dummies” summary? There are people here who might be interested but don’t know what it is.

Also, what approach would you take to running it? For example, lots of NPCs and planned plot or more character-driven? Groups of players against each other? Adventure/intrigue/other?

well in the shadowlands its a spectre ridden mockery of its former glory given over now to the evils and horrors of oblivion

Hey Dylan, count me in.

As an alternative to Mage, would you consider an Unknown Armies larp?

The Unknown Armies setting seems more low, urban and nasty which appeals to me. More Hellraiser, less Harry Potter.

wouldn’t describe the world of darkness setting for mage as harry potter myself.
not given it shares mileux with garou, vampires and baneful spirits all bent on the corruption and domination of this world.

I guess whether that’s a good thing depend on whether you want cross-over with werewolves and vampires and so on.

I was just poking fun. I do get the impression that the Unknown Armies setting is more “street” than Mage. It’s about little people struggling against an unknowable universe, which I think is a lot easier to do in larp than high magical powers.

I’d be very keen for this.

Is it new mage or old mage? (IE old WOD or WOD2.0?)

You’d be running it with “Laws of Assension”?

Plus it has stuff that takes a while to explain to new players…not everyone is as fluent about Paradox, Paradigms and Avatars.

indeed. put me down either as order of Hermes or sons of ether.

I was thinking about trying out the new rules but if people prefer the older rules then prehaps thats the way I’d go. I’d like at least one PC for each tradition of whichever edition we end up using and then we can start hunting a venue. While there might be quite a bit to learn thats never hurt MET vampire. In fact if people have played the vampire larp then they’ll already know most of the rules and only have to learn about the spheres. Tell your friends and see who’s interested in playing what.
